Claire Foy continues to rise as one of the biggest names in Hollywood. The actress first grabbed national attention in 2016 when “The Crown” took over Netflix. Foy’s role as Queen Elizabeth already won two SAG trophies, as well as a Golden Globe. The actress also turned in a strong turn in “First Man” earlier this year, making her one of the frontrunners for an Oscar nomination in supporting actress. She also put in a strong run in “Unsane” from Steven Soderberg. Now, she’s taking on another Oscar-nominated role in 2018, this time as Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.”
The new trailer today comes from Sony as it gears up to release the new thriller. The feature comes from Fede Alvarez, best known for “Evil Dead” from 2013. Alvarez shows a penchant for making thrillers with violent ends for characters. Given the level of violence within the Millennium Series, he could be a strong choice. However, he often goes a little far with the violence, which will turn off many from watching the film.
Foy continues to build on an impressive resume. She’s not the only rising star in the film, with Sylvia Hoeks also finding her groove. Hoeks broke out last year as Luv in “Blade Runner 2049,” playing a villain in that film. She’s back on the bad side this time, taking revenge on Lisbeth. The sisterly feud elevates the violence to create more of an action thriller. In doing so, they discard the cold and slow burn feel of David Fincher’s universe, potentially making it a more commercial play. However, it may alienate the cinephile fans that elevated the Naomi Rapace and Mara led versions hits. This may be a defining film for Alvarez as he continues to build a bloody and violent filmography.
