Despite the success of the “Deadpool” franchise and Huge Jackman’s finale with “Logan,” there have been problems brewing in the Fox X-Men universe. Those films were undeniable hits, but audiences have seen the X-Men team up since 2016. “Dark Phoenix” and “The New Mutants” delays have caused the issue, with both features originally slated for 2018 releases. Part of the problem comes from the busy schedules of “Game of Thrones” actresses Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, making reshoots nearly impossible. However, considering how important Turner appears to be in “Dark Phoenix,” it’s unlikely there were any other options. The new trailer not only features Turner but also introduces audiences to a mysterious character played by Jessica Chastain.
With the new trailer, Turner take center stage. While “The Dark Phoenix” feels familiar, it has never been done in earnest for the big screen. Much of the plot got shredded in the disappointing “X-Men: The Last Stand” but it was undeniably part of the film. However, the internal struggle of Jean Gray bears more similarities to “Carrie” than any “X-Men” story. With that as the true standard, it feels like “Dark Phoenix” may trend more in that direction.
Chastain also carries around an air of mystery. The Oscar-nominated actress certainly does not need to join a franchise like this one so late in its run. The choice feels curious on its surface, which could prove positive for the series. Chastain also took on a blockbuster role in “It: Chapter 2” which will be one of the most anticipated films of 2019. She’s not the only actor to keep an eye on, with Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Jennifer Lawrence returning. With more focus this time around, director Simon Kinberg hopes to keep the franchise rolling.
