The James Gunn controversy very much stoked anger in almost every corner of the internet in some way. On one hand, conservatives loudly complained about the series of tweets Gunn had sent after Roseanne Barr was let go. On the left, the issue had already been litigated before the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” film. However, with rage brewing from all sides, Disney chose to duck out of the fray and play it safe. They let Gunn go, following the precedent they had set with the Barr firing. Many were upset that the director had become a casualty of the controversy. Meanwhile, DC sat back and waited, and when the noise quieted down, approached Gunn to write and potentially direct “Suicide Squad 2.”

According to The Wrap, multiple sources have confirmed that Gunn is in talks to write the film. Additionally, DC wants him to direct after parting ways with David Ayers. Gunn makes a lot of sense for DC. Most importantly, they do not have to worry about the issues surrounding the Barr fiasco. Simultaneously, they need as much talent working on the oddball franchise as possible. Considering that “Sucidide Squad” felt like a poorly made “Guardians,” we know he can work well with weird and strange characters.

Gunn was part of the Marvel brain trust before his firing. He clearly knows how to write these characters and deliver a decent project. Even though “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” fell short of expectations, “Suicide Squad 2” could easily become the second best DC film in the DCEU (behind “Wonder Woman“). He may also attract more talent to the comic book films of DC. Dave Bautista already wants in as well. The director will add style and talent to a studio that frankly needs him.
