With the Independent Spirit Awards Nominations only a few weeks away, many have begun to look toward the best in American indie films. However, the British Independent Film Awards made their mark today by announcing their nominees for the best in British cinema. Leading the pack is “The Favourite” with 13 nominations on the day. Olivia ColmanRachel Weisz, and Emma Stone all received nominations. Also of note, “American Animals” had a strong showing with 11 nominations. Bart Layton picked up nominations for Picture, Screenplay, Director and Debut Screenwriter.

You Were Never Really Here” nabbed 8 nominations, including a pair for a Picture, Screenplay, Director trio for Lynne Ramsay. “Beast” was good for 10 nominations, and “Disobiedience” was good for 5 nominations as well. Slightly underperforming was “Stan & Ollie,” although the film only just premiered in the UK. It grabbed 5 nominations, but curiously left out John C. Reilly in lieu of Steve Coogan.
