Alex Pettyfer continues to seem like an actor who will one day break out in a big way. Beginning in 2011, he began to headline projects, including “I Am Number Four,” “Beastly” and more. His casting in “Magic Mike” and “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” seemed to indicate he would appear in bigger titles going forward. Even his role in “Elvis & Nixon” indicated Pettyfer might try his hand at more awards driven filmmaking. Yet, few would have thought that Pettyfer would take a seat in the director’s chair. A couple years later, and the actor turned director will make his debut directorial debut with “Back Roads” adapted from Tawni O’Dell‘s novel.

Starring Pettyfer in the lead role, “Back Roads” follows a young man, Harley Altmyer, living in Pennsylvania. He cares for his three younger sisters after his father has died and his mother finds herself in jail. Struggling to make ends meet, he finds himself in a relationship with a Callie (Jennifer Morrison). Yet things spiral out of control as Harley begins to get questioned for a murder.

“Back Roads” debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2018. It was picked up by Samuel Goldwyn Films and has now been set for a December release date. It also stars Juliette Lewis, Nicola Peltz, and Robert Patrick. While it does not necessarily factor into the awards season, small thrillers like this one can sneak up on audiences and lead to something greater. For Pettyfer, he looks to deliver his strongest performance as an actor. Reviews were relatively positive on this one, so keep an eye out for the film as it reaches theaters and VOD. It might surprise you.
