Will Smith seems to have a big year ahead of him in 2019. He will take on the role of the Genie in “Aladdin” for Guy Ritchie and Disney. He will also star in the new Ang Lee film “Gemini Man” in October, potentially inserting himself into an Oscar race. Today, we got the first trailer for one his lighter entries in 2019, the Blue Sky Studios animated film, “Spies in Disguise,” also starring Tom Holland.
“Spies in Disguise” follows the story of super spy Lance Sterling (voiced by Smith). He’s the coolest spy in the world and has a great time being undercover. However, when one of the scientists working with Sterling, a young boy named Walter Beckett (Holland) turns Sterling into a pigeon, the two begin to rely on each other. With Sterling’s spy skills and Beckett’s inventions and science prowess, the two make an odd couple with some punch.
The film is directed by Troy Quane and Nick Bruno. Both are making the feature-length directorial debut with “Spies in Disguise,” but have plenty of experience on other projects. They both worked on “The Peanuts Movie” from a few years ago. Bruno also worked on “Rio” and “Horton Hears a Who” while Quane cut his teeth on “Enchanted,” “Hotel Transylvania” and more. In addition to Smith and Holland, the voice cast is filled out by Ben Mendelsohn, Karen Gillan, Rashida Jones, DJ Khaled, and Masi Oka. Blue Sky Animation has found its way into the Oscar race before, with “Rio,” “Ferdinand,” and “Ice Age.” With a fun premise and interesting animation, this one could be a studio push for a nomination. With a September release date, this might be one to keep an eye on.
