Netflix may have a full slate of films releasing this Fall and holiday season, but they still found room for an interesting Christmas story. From producer Christopher Columbus and directed by Clay Kaytis (“The Angry Birds Movie”), the streaming service will release a more lighthearted Christmas tale this year. Starring Kurt Russell as Santa Claus, this one looks to be a fun brother-sister comedy with some surprising visual effects and action setpieces. “The Christmas Chronicles” looks to be a fun film for all ages as we get a bit closer to the holidays.
Russell seems to be having a ball in the trailer. Channeling the energy of films like “The Santa Claus,” “The Christmas Chronicles” takes a more action and comedy spin on traditional Santa Claus stories. The heart of the film looks to revolve around the two kids in the film, Darby Camp and Judah Lewis. The two start the festivities by trying to catch Santa on tape. However, this gets the brother-sister duo mixed up in Santa’s latest adventure. Some light grand theft auto and jail time later, they have to save Christmas.
Netflix has continued to double down on event programming. Releasing the Russell-led feature film in November should draw some attention. It can capitalize on the Thanksgiving season as families look for something to watch. It also gives it time to work into some family’s Christmas film rotation before the actual holiday this year. After the successes of “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and “The Haunting of Hill House” around Halloween, expect an equally strong effort when it comes to Christmas programming.
