Last night, “The Walking Dead” brought its protagonist to his closing story on the series. Rick watched his friends and family consumed by the undead and the living for years. It seemed that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) would suffer a similar fate. However, it appears that AMC, “The Walking Dead” and Lincoln are not quite done telling stories about Sheriff Rick Grimes. For those who wish to know more, this is a SPOILER WARNING for what happened on last night’s episode. If you don’t want to spoilers, don’t open, dead inside.

Alright, now for a quick recap. Rick went to hell and back in the episode. He was impaled, he saw many of the ghosts of the past, and then surprisingly, survived what should have been a life ending blaze of glory event. However, Rick does not appear to die, which was quickly backed up by Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple.

“The story of Rick will go on in films. Right now, we’re working on three but there’s flexibility in that. … Over the next several years, we’re going to be doing specials, new series are quite a possibility, high-quality digital content and then some content that defies description at the moment. We’re going to dig into the past and see old characters. We’re going to introduce new characters and new situations.”

So Rick is not dead. In fact, he seems to be more alive than ever. Spinning off Rick’s farewell from the series into a movie franchise seems risky. Lincoln has always been great on the show, but there’s a very real issue of “Walking Dead” fatigue. A show notorious for its love of twists just executed another on an emotionally vulnerable audience. It is unclear if this was the smartest move, but you have to hand it to them. More people are talking about “The Walking Dead” today than in some time.
