In 2013, the world of film and entertainment lost one of its most exciting action stars. Paul Walker passed away after a car accident on the way to a charity event. At the time, he had been on the production of “Furious 7,” the latest film in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise. His sudden departure left a massive hole in the film and lives of those around him. The news of his passing brought on an outcry of pain from those who had grown close to him. It became clear that Walker left a mark on all who knew him, and the new documentary “I Am Paul Walker” looks at the man behind the camera.
The new documentary first premiered on television early this year. However, the new version of the film, slated to release on the fifth anniversary of his passing, added an additional thirty minutes of footage. Starting with his life as a young actor, and tracking his career through “Varsity Blues,” “The Fast and the Furious,” and more, we see his career grow. However, he also worked hard outside of the world of movies and television. His NGO, Reach Out Worldwide, helped give Walker a charitable outlet to make a difference in the world.
Most of the family appears in the documentary, giving their thoughts and memories of the man whom they loved. There are also moments with those involved in the action franchise that will let Walker live on. Tyrese Gibson, Rob Cohen, and Wayne Kramer all voice their admiration and experience with Walker. The documentary seeks to be a love letter to a kind movie star, one who touched many lives before is time was cut short. Yet even in sadness, Walker’s story can inspire and help craft his legacy.
