As television has grown more cinematic, it was only a matter of time before they invaded the multiplex. While many other films have been based on television properties, it has been rare to see the stars of the tv show reprise their roles. Outside of the “Entourage” film, most shows have not really tried. However, some of the big television shows of the Peak TV era are being adapted for feature films. While the future bodes well for “Deadwood” and “The Sopranos” films, the first up will be “Downton Abbey” for Focus Features. The BBC mega-hit became a pop culture sensation and was an Emmy juggernaut. Today, we got the first trailer for the continued story.
“Downton Abbey” became an international hit when it broke through in America. It debuted in September of 2010, before premiering in America in January of 2011. Much of the American audience initially tuned in to see Dame Maggie Smith. Smith was still in the middle of filming “Harry Potter,” but the series charmed audiences from the word go. The actress became an Emmy mainstay, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series three times. The series itself would pick up at least ten Emmy nominations in five of its six seasons.
The transition to the big screen is no guarantee for the narrative though. Many audiences thought that a sequel film was possible, but the show ended strong. It’s possible that reopening the adventures of the Crawley family and their servants. With a September release date, there’s plenty of room for “Downton Abbey” to pick up a hefty box office. With Michael Engler directing and the strong ensemble returning, “Downton” will be the place to be next September.
