Tonight the 2018 Golden Globe Awards will be held, bringing us ever closer to the Academy Awards. Oscar night is more important, but the Globes are almost always more fun. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association essentially is throwing a party. Not only is the vibe different, oftentimes, the winners chosen by voters are a more diverse crop than the Academy. That’s what we want to look at today, namely seeing which of those wins are among your favorites.
Sometimes, the Globes manage to reward films that we wish Oscar would get behind. When AMPAS missed the boat on honoring titles like “American Hustle,” “Boyhood,” “Lady Bird,” and “The Martian,” at all, the Golden Globe voters did not. While the Academy gave smaller wins to “Brokeback Mountain,” “La La Land,” “Lost in Translation,” “Saving Private Ryan,” and “The Social Network,” the Globes went for it in one of their Best Picture categories. Their track record with Best Director prizes is terrific too. Just look at David Fincher for “The Social Network” and Richard Linklater for “Boyhood” as proof of that fact.
The HFPA may nominate some unusual performances, but the winners almost always are top notch. Ryan Gosling has a Best Actor prize for “La La Land” because of them. The same goes for Paul Giamatti in “Barney’s Version,” Matt Damon in “The Martian,” and Mickey Rourke for “The Wrestler.” Jessica Chastain has a Best Actress statue for “Zero Dark Thirty,” something that the Academy Awards did not see fit to bestow upon her. Plus, don’t forget that they’ve not only nominated Jim Carrey for a number of awards, but they’ve also given him a pair of wins too.
We want to hear from you. Let us know who and what your favorite Golden Globe winners of all time are. Classic? Modern? It’s all up to you. Have at it!
