South by Southwest (SXSW)—the Austin-based event comprised of a conference and festivals (music and film)—has announced today that Jordan Peele’s highly anticipated “Us,” the follow-up to his Oscar-winning debut “Get Out,” will have its World Premiere as the Opening Night feature of this year’s festivities on Friday, March 8, 2019.

With “Get Out,” Peele positioned himself as one of the most visionary and refreshing voices in modern cinema. He defied genre biases by delivering a box-office mash that went to win countless awards for its innovative ideas and socially relevant themes. His latest look into the dark side of the human experience is set to become one of the most important cinematic events of the year.

“We are crazy excited to world premiere the most anticipated film of 2019 from the creative powerhouse that brought us Get Out,” said Janet Pierson, Director of Film at SXSW. “We honestly couldn’t imagine a more perfect film to kick off the 2019 SXSW Film Festival.

Starring Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o as Adelaide Wilson, “Us” is set along the Northern California coastline. Adelaide is a woman visiting her childhood home with her husband Gabe (Winston Duke) and their children. Soon, however, what was supposed to be an ideal family vacation, turns into something unexpectedly much darker. As unresolved trauma begins haunting Adelaide, a terrifying discovery sets into motion the movie’s unsettling plot. The family is inevitably pushed to the edge of their sanity

SXSW Film Festival will unveil most of its feature slate on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 (with the exception of the Midnighters and Festival Favorites sections). Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Episodic Pilot Competition, Virtual Cinema, Music Videos and Title Sequence Competition will be announced on Wednesday, February 6, 2019
