After the smashing success of “Venom,” a sequel has now been given a greenlight. Despite the bad reviews “Venom” received, its box office still made a sequel inevitable. After all, money and Hollywood have a rather symbiotic relationship. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a screenwriter has already been attached. Writer Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote the first film, will return to pen the script.
Some of Marcel’s other writing credits include “Saving Mr. Banks” and “Fifty Shades Of Grey.” She’s also in line to pen the upcoming prequel “Cruella” for Disney. It’s unclear whether she’ll write “Venom 2” solo. But she’s still getting another opportunity to write a big studio film regardless.
Meanwhile, stars Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams are expected to return as well. Same with Woody Harrelson who had a cameo at the end of the first film. Harrelson appeared as serial killer Cletus Kasady who becomes Venom’s archnemesis known as Carnage. So, he’ll likely have a large part in the sequel.
The announcement of “Venom 2” is also a part of the Spider-Man craze going on at Sony. Along with this film, they currently have a Morbius spinoff starring Jared Leto in the works. Plus, “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” just won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. Sony even had the cancelled spinoff “Silver & Black” in the works. But apparently, they might still split “Silver & Black” into two separate solo films.
One other thing that’s unclear is whether Ruben Fleischer, who helmed “Venom,” will return. Right now, he has “Zombieland 2,” which is also from Sony, in the pipeline. So, if that one gets fast tracked, he might not come back for another go around. Time will tell.
