Screenwriter Dan Gilroy wowed us five years ago with “Nightcrawler,” his directorial debut. Then, in 2017, he had a slight misfire with “Roman J. Israel, Esq..” However, even though it was a misfire, lead actor Denzel Washington still got a Best Actor nomination. But now, Gilrow will try wowing us again with “Velvet Buzzsaw,” a new psychological thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
Set in the dark underworld of art dealing, “Velvet Buzzsaw” follows the story of Morf Vandewalt (Gyllenhaal). After Morf discovers a series of mysterious paintings, a malevolent force begins to exact revenge. It attempts to antagonize anyone that lets greed get in the way of art.
Judging by the trailer, it looks like it’s going to be one twisted experience. It seems unclear what the exact entity that’s antagonizing the main characters is. But the beauty of trailers is that they don’t tell us everything. If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that the cast is going to be killer.
Aside from Gyllenhaal, the cast includes Rene Russo, John Malkovich, Daveed Diggs, Zawe Ashton, Toni Collette, and Billy Magnussen. As a bonus, the film is a “Nightcrawler” reunion. Not only does it have Gyllenhaal, Russo, and Gilroy reteaming but cinematographer Robert Elswit is once again behind the camera.
The villainous ambiguity and the stellar ensemble will probably have viewers hyped up with anticipation. Well thankfully, people don’t have to wait long. It will premiere on Netflix next month and will screen at the Sundance Film Festival this month. So, audiences will get an early word on it before its release.
