We’re on to our next round of Academy Idol XII, and this week is Ensemble Week! Before we jump into the ensembles, however, we have to reveal the results of Round 3. It was another close round of voting, but another film gets dropped from the competition. Let’s see those results, and then jump into Round 4 voting.
Round 3 Results
Three films rose to the top of the voting and put a bit of distance between themselves and the rest of the field. The top 3 of the week were:
- “A Star Is Born” (2)
- “The Favourite” (3)
- “Roma” (2)
The winner for this week repeats as the champion this week. “The Favourite” ran away with the round and takes home it’s second win in the competition. “The Favourite” is the only film to finish in the Top 3 every week. This also pushes on both “A Star Is Born” and “Roma” into the next round. Each of those films has finished in the Top 3 twice.
The next group of films are safe and advance to the Round 4.
- “A Quiet Place”
- “If Beale Street Could Talk“
- “Isle of Dogs“
- “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse“
This leaves us with a bottom 3 eligible for elimination. They are:
- “Black Panther” (2)
- “Eighth Grade” (2)
For both “Black Panther” and “Eighth Grade,” this is their second appearance in the bottom 3. However, one of the films has to go home this week. Our eliminated film is “Black Panther,” the domestic box office leader in 2018. Unfortunately for “Black Panther,” the week has not gone well for the Marvel behemoth. It’s hoping for a better showing as the Oscars announce their nominations soon.
Now it’s time for the voting for the next round. The theme for Academy Idol XII Round 4 will be Cast Ensemble. Several films in the competition stand out in the ensemble categories. “A Star Is Born” and “BlacKkKlansman” each received a SAG Ensemble nomination, so they should be strongest going into the round. However, films like “The Favourite,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and “Widows” were tailor-made for the category. Addionally, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “Isle of Dogs” each featured sprawling casts, even for animated films. On the flip side, the cores of “Eighth Grade,” “Hereditary,” “A Quiet Place,” and “Roma” make up for their lack of quantity with quality.
Ultimately the choice is yours! Pick your 5 favorite ensembles of the year in the poll below and let your voice heard in the comments below!
