One of the funniest horror comedies in recent memory, “What We Do in the Shadows” surprised many when it released in early 2015. The mockumentary about vampires came from Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement, both of which starred in and directed the film as well. The comedy ran deep with the film, and quickly caught on in horror circles. After all, it was at once a love-letter to vampire lore and an excellent mockumentary of the sub-genre. Despite its popularity, few suspected there could be sequels to the film. Yet FX announced they would pick up the IP as a television series, and we now have our first look at the show.
The trailer does a good job at selling some of the hijinks of the film and transferring it to the small screen. While some of the beats are straight from the film, little twists here bode well for the film. Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén and Mark Proksch make up the series regulars. The show will still have creative oversight from Clement, who pitched the show as a ten-episode first season.
The silly and offbeat humor of the trailer was commonplace in the film. The physical gags of vampires flying through the sky, killing virgins, and leaning into the imagery of Dracula was commonplace in the first film. They also lay the groundwork for showdowns with Werewolves, who hate the vampire community. The groundwork for a larger universe was certainly in play, and now we have that opportunity to explore the larger context of the world through the show. Despite being on television, expect some silly and even comical violence at times on the show. FX will likely let Clement and his team stretch the limits on this one.
