We’re back for more Academy Idol XII! Round 9 will focus on the screenplays, the lifeblood of a film. Without good writing, it is rare that a film can ascend as an Oscar contender. With this in mind, let’s check out the results of Round 8, and then dive into voting.
Round 8 Results
We’re down to our last six films, so let’s check out our top three and bottom three contenders. The top 3 films this round were:
- “A Star Is Born” (7th Top 3 Finish)
- “The Favourite” (8th Top 3 Finish, 6 Wins)
- “Roma” (4th Top 3 Finish)
In an extremely close race this week “The Favourite” prevailed again! This marks the seventh win for the period comedy/drama. With less votes for the readers, the top three tightened up considerably. It’ll be curious to see how the results will shake out with only 2 votes this round.
Meanwhile, our bottom three films were:
- “Hereditary” (3rd Bottom Finish)
- “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2nd Bottom Finish)
- “Widows” (3rd Bottom Finish)
This one was also tight, with each of the three films set for elimination over the course of the two days. However, one film fell behind and could not quite keep up. Thus, we have to say goodbye to “Widows,” which made an impressively deep run despite little awards success. Our readers recognized the accomplishments of the film regardless, and that’s great that you went your own way!
Now that we’re down to our last five films, let’s look at the screenplays! Of our list, our top contenders “A Star Is Born,” “The Favourite,” and “Roma” each earned Oscar nominations for their screenplays. However, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” made a strong push late in the game. Many have enjoyed “Hereditary” as a screenplay as well, which was also written by director Ari Aster. We are dropping the votes this week so that you can only pick 2 films. Which will you support?
