One of the most anticipated films of 2019 as an acting showcase has to be “Harriet” from director and writer Kasi Lemmons. The director of “Eve’s Bayou” and “Talk to Me” makes her return to filmmaking with the epic tale of Harriet Tubman. The woman, known for leading the Underground Railroad and freeing slaves, remains an icon today. With Cynthia Erivo, one of AwardsCircuit’s breakout stars in 2018, playing Tubman we cannot help but be excited. The first images of Erivo in the role were released today and they live up to the lofty expectations.
Each of the images focuses solely on Erivo. She’s the actress most likely to break out of the film. She could even find herself in contention for the Best Actress Oscar in 2020. Erivo looks to embody the woman on a physical level. You can already read the exhaustion and fear within the character in these images. However, as the saying goes, you cannot be brave without fear.
An official synopsis from Focus Features can be found below.
Based on the story of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman, “Harriet” follows Tubman on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity.
“Harriet” also features a stellar cast beyond Erivo. Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn and more are on board. Keep an eye on Lemmons as one of women directors looking to crash the Best Director field in 2019. Lemmons has an overdue narrative, and this period piece biopic of one of the most important Americans ever could be the ticket. With Focus Features distributing, “Harriet” has the pedigree to be a potential Best Picture player next year.
