Every child’s worst nightmare, Chucky, is returning for more play time. Also, he is another iconic horror villain getting the remake treatment. Previously, Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers received that treatment. Plus, “Candyman” is getting a remake. But right now, it’s Chucky’s turn. The newest teaser for the “Child’s Play” remake gives us a glimpse at his upcoming reign of terror.
The story remains the same as the original. Karen Barclay (Aubrey Plaza) gets her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman) a toy for his birthday. However, the toy turns out to be murderous. Meanwhile, Detective Mike Norris (Brian Tyree Henry), who’s investigating the doll’s string of homicidal murders, comes to the aid of Karen and Andy. Same story except it’s in a more contemporary setting.
Much like the posters, the trailer does an expert job at keeping Chucky in the shadows. Although his look may be similar to the original Chucky, it’s unclear how similar it is. Also, without the iconic voice of Brad Dourif, it’s curious as to whether Chucky will lose his scare factor. Dourif has voiced Chucky in every incarnation of the original franchise. So, how will the character fare without his strong association to it?
In addition, writer/franchise creator Don Mancini isn’t involved. Instead, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, the producing team behind the “It” films, are behind it. At the film’s helm is Lars Klevberg while Tyler Burton Smith has penned the script.
The franchise has a new creative team behind it making it for the modern era. Whether the remake will live up to the original remains to be seen. But the teaser still has its fair share of creepiness.
