Octavia Spencer has proven herself to be a reliable scene stealer. However, she hasn’t ever played a leading role in a movie. But thankfully, that is changing. In the upcoming horror film “Ma” from Blumhouse, she plays the titular antagonist. Also, the film’s trailer demonstrates how deranged her character is.

In “Ma,” Spencer plays Sue Ann, a lonely woman who befriends a group of teenagers. Sue Ann seems welcoming at first and even lets them party at her house. However, as they grow closer to her, they realize she’s not as wholesome as she appears.

Judging by the trailer, Spencer seems like she has a meaty role to work with. Not to mention, she gets to play a character more psychotic than ones she usually plays. So, this is a good opportunity for her to further demonstrate her range. Plus, she’s reteaming with Tate Taylor who directed her to an Oscar win for “The Help.”

In addition to Spencer, Luke Evans, Juliette Lewis, Missi Pyle, and her ‘Help’ co-star Allison Janney star as well. Meanwhile, newcomers Diana Silvers, Corey Fogelmanis, and McKaley Miller round out the rest of the cast.

Along with Tate Taylor, Scotty Landes co-wrote the film’s script. Also, it is produced by John Norris and Jason Blum through his Blumhouse label. Blum has produced plenty of genuine horror hits including “Get Out,” “The Purge,” and “Happy Death Day” along with its newest sequel. Given the film’s name recognition along with the marketable genre, “Ma” could end up being his latest hit. It may be coming out in May when more blockbusters start to hit. However, that’s the beauty of counterprogramming.
