At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, “The Souvenir” premiered and made quite a splash. In addition, it won the Dramatic World Cinema Grand Jury Prize. Now, A24 Films has dropped a new trailer for the acclaimed British drama.
“The Souvenir” looks to offer up its own look at first love. However, it aims to demonstrate how it comes with severe complications. Also, Joanna Hogg, whose previous feature was “Exhibition” from 2013, wrote and directed the film.
Here’s an official studio synopsis:
A shy but ambitious film student (Honor Swinton Byrne) begins to find her voice as an artist while navigating a turbulent courtship with a charismatic but untrustworthy man (Tom Burke). She defies her protective mother (Tilda Swinton) and concerned friends as she slips deeper and deeper into an intense, emotionally fraught relationship that comes dangerously close to destroying her dreams.
Judging by the trailer, “The Souvenir” offers a rather meditative portrait of a crumbling relationship. In addition, it features Oscar winner Tilda Swinton, playing one role instead of three like in “Suspiria,” her previous feature. Also, both Swinton and her real life daughter, Honor Swinton Byrne, get to share the screen together.
Besides Tilda Swinton, British comedian Richard Ayoade and Jack McMullen co-star as well.
The film is being currently planned for a summer release. That means it could play well with the arthouse crowds looking for something to see besides blockbusters which tend to dominate audience buzz during that period. If the film’s critical raves are any indication, “The Souvenir” does have its fair share of hype.
