Today brings a warmup for the Academy Awards. Yes, it’s the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Oscar’s hipster cousin is often looked at as a fun alternative to the massive elephant we spend so much time obsessing over. As a precursor (no pun intended) to the big show tomorrow, we want you to take a crack at predicting this unpredictable award.
This year, there isn’t much Academy Award crossover to be found with the Spirit Award nominees. Leading the way was “We The Animals,” which was miles away from Oscar attention. Other Spirit Award favorites this time around were “Eighth Grade,” “Leave No Trace,” and “You Were Never Really Here,” all of which were shut out. Those of you who prefer more indie fare have a number of offbeat nominees to back here, that’s for sure.
In terms of predictions, the aforementioned titles will be fighting it out for honors with contenders like “First Reformed” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.” One of those will presumably walk away with the top prize, though anything is possible. Maybe there’s an upset win for someone like John Cho in “Searching” or Toni Collette in “Hereditary?” To be sure, any outcome would make sense. Considering how crazy Oscar season has been, it’s only fair that the Spirit Awards would be wide open as well.
Here we go, ladies and gentlemen. Step right up and predict today’s Independent Spirit Awards. Consider it a bit of last minute Oscar practice. We’re all ears!
