Ryan Reynolds voicing the character of Pikachu seems like a strange choice. Reynolds is famous for the “Deadpool” franchise as the violent Merc with a Mouth. Now, he’s playing the most famous and also, most adorable Pokemon character. Again, seems like an oddball choice. However, the latest trailer for “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” shows some surprising results. Reynolds’ traditional wisecracking humor seems to let the character come alive in a creative way.
The story of “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” is as follows. A young man named Tim (Justice Smith) attempts to investigate the disappearance of his father. But over the course of his search, he runs into the famous Pikachu. As it turns out, Tim is the only one who can understand what Pikachu says. Together, they join forces to find Tim’s father and roam the streets of Ryme City on their journey. However, they eventually discover a plot that puts the fate of the Pokemon Universe at risk.
In addition, Tim and Pikachu run into all sorts of Pokemon characters including Mr. Mime and Mewtwo. The number of characters the trailer shows should be enough to satisfy die-hard fans everywhere. Plus, there are some killer visual effects shown. The use of the song “I Need A Hero” by Bonnie Tyler gives the trailer a bit of flare as well. Similarly, the previous trailer used “Happy Together” by The Turtles.
Ken Watanabe, Kathryn Newton, and Karan Soni co-star along with Reynolds and Smith. Also, the film is directed by Rob Letterman whose previous credits include “Shark Tale,” “Goosebumps,” and “Monsters vs. Aliens.”
