Best Bet

The Hurt Locker” (Netflix)

Less than a week after the Oscars, this Best Picture winner made some history of its own. When Kathryn Bigelow won Best Director, she became the first ever woman to take the prize. Her win is truly one of the best in recent memory, as her movie is a phenomenal war tale. Roger Ebert went nuts for it, as you can see below:

The Hurt Locker is a spellbinding war film by Kathryn Bigelow, a master of stories about men and women who choose to be in physical danger.

The Hurt Locker” is now an undisputed classic. If you somehow have not ever seen it, now is the time to fix that.  As of March 1st, it’s streaming on Netflix!

Catch It Before It’s Gone

United 93” (Netflix)

Paul Greengrass‘ unflinching look at simple heroism on 9/11 remains an essential bit of cinema. The emotion contained within is wrenching, but to allow the film to work its magic is to really feel like you were there on that terrible day. Roger Ebert certainly felt the same way in his rave review:

To watch United 93 is to be confronted with the grim chaotic reality of that autumn day in 2001.

United 93” is a must watch, if a tough one to sit through. It’s well worth it, however. March 1st marks its last day on Netflix, so get around to it ASAP!
