You can also watch the return of “American Idol” on ABC, and “Good Girls” on NBC, both of which have hold their season premieres tonight. “Free Solo,” “The Lion King,” and “Smokey and the Bandit” make for feel-good movies to check out.

What’s Premiering?

Leaving Neverland Documentary

“Leaving Neverland” on HBO at 8 PM

HBO rolls out the first part of “Leaving Neverland,” a documentary series about Michael Jackson and the children that were allegedly molested by the pop superstar. When  “Leaving Neverland” premiered at Sundance, it immediately drew attention. It has been described as an emotional documentary and one that could reframe how we view Jackson. However, the estate of Jackson has fought back against “Leaving Neverland,” claiming it to be a false portrayal of the events in question. Regardless, audiences can find out for themselves when it begins its two-part series tonight on HBO.

What’s Premiering?

“American Idol” on ABC at 8 PM

The beloved singing competition returns. “American Idol” helped create pop superstars Kelly Clarkson, Clay AikenCarrie Underwood, and more. While “The Voice” airs on Mondays and Tuesdays, “American Idol” can retake the ratings for ABC on Sunday nights. With the first few episodes showcasing the tryouts, look for hilarious gags, as well as inspiring stories to win the night.

What’s Returning?

“Good Girls” (NBC) at 10 PM

ABC returns one of its surprise renewals from last season. While Christina HendricksMae Whitman, and Retta should have drawn larger ratings last year, it is possible many were confused by the tone of the show. Luckily, NBC moved the series to Netflix for the summer, and it seems like awareness has grown for the show. The story follows three women who have found their way into a world of crime. After things go sideways, the women have to navigate the dangerous world they’ve stumbled into. Hendricks and Retta, in particular, stand out, and hopefully “Good Girls” continues to gain steam.

Movies on TV

“Free Solo” on National Geographic at 9 PM

The recently crowned Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo” airs on National Geographic tonight at 9 PM. The story of Alex Honnold climbing El Capitan was thrilling, but the action/adventure doc has far more going on. Filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vassarelyi and Jimmy Chin bring Alex’s girlfriend into the narrative, questioning Honnold’s actual commitment to the climb. Chin also led a team of cinematographers, who climbed El Capitan while operating film equipment. A moving and intimate documentary, the sheer act of getting capturing this story showcases brilliant filmmaking.

“The Lion King” on Freeform at 7:55 PM

You can also check out “The Lion King” on Freeform at 7:55 PM. The animated classic turns 25 years old this year, but it remains a must-watch to this day. The stunning animation created a high point that Disney could not recapture for another decade. The combination of thrilling music from Hans ZimmerTim Rice, and Elton John helped to sell the Shakespearean feel to the story. It also features several of the very best vocal performances in animated film history, including Jeremy IronsJames Earl Jones, and Nathan Lane. The beloved Disney feature receives a remake this year, so now is a good time to remind yourself of the original’s brilliance.

Smokey and the Bandit” on Encore at 9 PM

Finally, “Smokey and the Bandit” airs on Encore at 9 PM. The late-Burt Reynolds may not have made a movie that was more dependent on his unfailing charisma than this one. Sally Field also delivers a fun comedic performance as a woman running from her marriage. Jackie Gleason nearly steals the movie out from under them with his comedic work as Sheriff Bufford T. Justice. “Smokey and the Bandit” functions as an homage to the “Good Old Boy” South, while mostly rejecting the racism that many associate with the region. While there are still problematic moments, “Smokey and the Bandit” attempted to represent a more progressive South for audiences after the bleak 1960s.
