Fox Searchlight has released a brand new trailer for “Tolkien,” a biopic based on the life of author J.R.R. Tolkien. Nicholas Hoult, last seen in the Oscar-winning film, “The Favourite,” stars in the title role.
Tolkien is one of the most prolific writers of fantasy fiction. The author of highly popular books such as “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” created a fantastical world called “Middle Earth.” A place of hobbits, dwarves, elves, and one ring to rule them all. The books turned into a successful franchise, directed by Peter Jackson. The third film in the trilogy, “Return of the King,” won Best Picture in 2003.
The film follows Tolkien’s life from childhood, highlighting the friendships he made along the way, and includes his service in World War I. It serves to paint a portrait of the man who would eventually change the fantasy genre forever.
The official synopsis for “Tolkien” can be found below.
TOLKIEN explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.
Finnish director Dome Karukoski magically weaves imagery from Tolkien’s fantasy world into his reality. It’s an interesting choice, given how iconic Jackson’s trilogies influenced cinema. Seeing a dragon breathing fire on a battlefield certainly makes for great imagery.
Making a biopic is already an uphill battle, as most of them are forgettable. “Tolkien,” however, could be something special. Karukosi’s previous film, “Tom of Finland,” was a success and he proves to be a talent to keep an eye on.
