Idris Elba is currently in talks to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in “Suicide Squad 2.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elba has had conversations with James Gunn, who is still slated to write and direct the sequel to the 2016 financial hit. The report also states that Elba was Gunn’s and Warner Bros. first and only choice for the role.

After Will Smith announced his departure, much was made as to who will replace him. If Smith is going to be replaced by anyone, Elba is a more than qualified candidate.

Many know him for his stellar work on the HBO show “The Wire,” and his Screen Actors Guild-winning performance in “Beasts of No Nation.”

He will next be seen as the villain slot “Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbes and Shaw,” on Aug. 6, 2019, and will also be hosting “Saturday Night Live” this upcoming weekend.

THR also states that the studio is “extremely high on The Suicide Squad and its script, written by Gunn — so much so that the pic is barrelling forward into the casting stage after Gunn quickly turned out several drafts.”

This is good news for the DC Universe as they build momentum and even more good news for Gunn. After the controversial firing from Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy 3,” he seems to be landing back on his feet. Elba is also a veteran of Marvel movies, playing Heimdall in the “Thor” series.  People who remember the first few minutes of “Avengers: Infinity War” may recall Heimdall’s emotional departure.

It will be interesting to see how this shakes out, given that DC’s track record has been met with divisive responses from critics and fans alike. Though showing vast improvement, the DCEU is still greeted with skepticism. Gunn’s talent might just be enough to surprise everyone.
