To say that filmmaker Taika Waititi follows the beat of his own drummer is a gross understatement. Between “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” “Thor: Ragnorak,” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” he’s a talent working on a whole other level. How many directors can enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe and keep his own voice? Anything Waititi does is worth paying attention to, that’s for sure. Today, we can report that he’s taking on a seminal Terry Gilliam work.

According to Variety, Waititi will direct the first episode of the currently in development “Time Bandits” series for Apple. A remake/television adaptation of Gilliam’s film, he’ll be able to mix his own sensibility into an already zany recipe. The results could be magical. Waititi will direct and co-write the pilot before moving into a producing role.

A refresher, from the story:

The “Thor: Ragnarok” director is set to helm Apple’s TV adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy flick “Time Bandits,” which is currently in development.

The original film told the crazy, multi-dimensional story of an English youngster, Kevin, who discovers his wardrobe contains a time hole. A group of six dwarfs come through the hole and proceed to lead Kevin on a series of adventures across history, making stops in ancient Greece, the Middle Ages, Napoleonic times and the early 1900s, before confronting Evil when they arrive at the Fortress of Ultimate Darkness.

The film starred Gilliam’s fellow Monty Python collaborator John Cleese, as well as Sean Connery and “The Lord of the Rings” actor Ian Holm.

Waititi seems like a perfect choice to reinterpret Gilliam. As such, “Time Bandits” is yet another project of his to eagerly anticipate.
