Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for “Good Boys,” a raunchy comedy starring 12-year olds. In addition to that, it’s produced by Seth Rogen. Most filmgoers know him as the stoned comedic genius who gave us “Pineapple Express” and “Sausage Party.” He’s back again and this time he has kids.
Jacob Tremblay, best known for his widely-praised work in “Room,” stars as Max. Max is just like any other kid in sixth grade. His best friends, Thor and Lucas, join him in playing with Max’s dad’s drone. However, things go wrong and the drone is destroyed. Desperate to fix it, the boys skip school and start an adventure of raunch and bad decisions that will make any parent squirm in their seats.
The trailer itself is very funny, which is to be expected. Rogen is a big talent to Hollywood comedy nowadays. He’s always willing to push the envelope and tell new stories. Whether it’s assassinating the leader of North Korea in “The Interview“ or surviving an apocalypse in “This Is the End,” Rogen proves he’s not afraid to take a risk.
Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky serve as both the writers and directors. Given that their previous writing efforts were “Year One” and “Bad Teacher,” this could be a red flag. Both of those comedies were met with negative reviews. Skepticism is entirely warranted. However, with a funny premise and Rogen at the helm, this could make for a worthwhile comedy.
“Good Boys” will premiere at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival on March 11, 2019. The first reactions there will tell us if this movie will sink or swim.
