Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart” just screened to critical acclaim at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival. Therefore, it is only natural that a trailer is released in all of its red-band glory.
Kaitlyn Dever (“Last Man Standing”) plays Amy, a student who spent more time hitting the books than the parties. Beanie Feldstein, last seen in Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird,” plays her loyal best friend. They both realize they spent high school working too hard and playing too less. As a result, they become determined to cram in four years of high school fun into one wild and crazy night. Hijinks and arrests are almost guaranteed to make this a night they’ll never forget.
The premise certainly has echoes of “Superbad,” however, telling it from the perspective of two girls provides an exciting take on it. Just from the trailer, the two leads already have a nice rapport and terrific chemistry. There is also a shot in the trailer where the two of them are transformed into dolls, which is likely indicative of how weird this movie could get.
The rest of the cast includes comedic veterans such as Will Forte, Lisa Kudrow, and Jason Sudeikis.
After its premiere at the SXSW film festival, Indiewire called it “hilarious” and the “best teen party movie since Superbad.” Not bad for what is Wilde’s first feature film. Her last performance was in the much-reviled “Life Itself.” Over the years, she received critical acclaim for her performance in Reed Morano’s “Meadowland” in 2015, and had a high-profile role in the short-lived HBO series “Vinyl.” It’s good to see her back on the big screen, even if it is behind the camera.
