What’s On TV? – Tuesday (3/19/19) – ‘The Village’ & a Rob Lowe Game Show Premiere

0

Two new programs lead the night on television. Producer and host Rob Lowe brings “Mental Samurai,” a new game show, to Fox. “The Village” adds another drama in the vein of “This Is Us” to NBC tonight as well. Comedy Central features back-to-back returns of late-night shows “Tosh.0″ and “The Jim Jeffries Show.” Finally, catch up with another Circuit Madness contender with “The Best Years of Our Lives” on TCM.

Pick of the Day

“Mental Samurai” (FOX) at 9 PM

Rob Lowe hosts a new game show that combines odd physical challenges with mental stamina. “The Mental Samurai” puts contestants into a mechanical ball, where they spin around in circles. The ball stops moving and the contestants have to quickly answer trivia questions. If they can get all twelve questions right in five minutes, they move on to the Samurai Circle for a chance to win $100,000. The trivia does not appear to be too difficult, but Lowe and the energy of the contestants will need to carry this one.

What’s Premiering?

“The Village” (NBC) at 10 PM

A sprawling ensemble drama series makes it premiere on NBC tonight. “The Village” follows the feel-good storytelling of “This Is Us,” and seems like it will also cause tears on a nightly basis. It follows the tenets of a Brooklyn apartment building as they bond as family, neighbors, and friends. Several characters draw from real-world issues, including immigration, veteran’s with PTSD, and raising children as a single parent. NBC hopes “The Village” becomes their latest hit, and with “This Is Us” as the lead-in, should hold strong ratings.

What’s Returning

“Tosh.0″ (Comedy Central) & “The Jim Jefferies Show” (Comedy Central) at 10 PM & 10:30 PM

A double feature of bro comedy should scratch an itch for some viewers. The social media/YouTube jokester Daniel Tosh returns with “Tosh.0” taking over Tuesday nights. Tosh is known for his abrasive comedy style, and willingness to pull no punches when it comes to people doing dumb things on th internet. “The Jim Jefferies” show returns with the titular comedian for its third season. The talk show covers the last week’s events and brings Jefferies’ unique perspective. The two comedians make for a good combo hour.

Movies on TV

“The Best Years of Our Lives” on TCM at 8 PM

Another one of the big contenders for Circuit Madness, “The Best Years of Our Lives” remains one of the standout films of the 1940s. William Wyler directs the story of servicemen returning home after World War II and their struggle to readjust. “The Best Years of Our Lives” won seven of the eight Oscars it was nominated for, including Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Actor for Harold Russell. Russell remains one of two non-professional actors to actually win an acting Oscar.

“What About Bob?” on Cinemax at 8 PM

The underrated 1990’s comedy created an unlikely comedy duo. Richard Dreyfus and Bill Murray pushed each other in a cat and mouse game. Successful psychotherapist Dr. Marvin (Dreyfus) takes on a new client Bob (Murray) with obsessive needs. While Bob makes for a decent patient, the problems between the two escalate when he tracks down Marvin on his vacation. As their relationship continues, the absurdity escalates in the Frank Oz directed story.

“The Holiday” on E! at 8 PM

Nancy Meyers followed up “Something’s Got to Give” with a global story romantic comedy. Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz live very different lives across the globe but run into personal issues with men. In an attempt to move on, they swap houses and for a much-needed vacation. Along the way, they discover love, happiness, and Eli Wallach as a Golden Age screenwriter.
