This Wednesday night provides a bevy of TV options to choose from. Dark comedy fans with a cable subscription especially should rejoice. Between the FX premiere of “What We Do in the Shadows” and the return of “Happy!” on Syfy, there’s plenty to laugh and grimace at in equal measures. If that’s not your cup of tea, never fear. Whether it be reality competition, telenovela virgins, home renovations or musicals, there’s something for everyone tonight.
PICK OF THE DAY
“What We Do In The Shadows” (FX) at 10 p.m. ET
Have you ever wondered how a vampire would navigate modern tasks like shopping and going out? FX’s latest comedy series “What We Do In The Shadows” proves the fish-out-of-water concept never dies, much like the show’s characters. Based on the 2014 comedy of the same name by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the show takes the action from New Zealand to New York. Actually, the show takes place in Staten Island, more specifically. Three centuries-old roommates must navigate the modern world in all its confusion. The concept of vampires in the modern world yielded one of the most unexpected gems of the past few years. While the series introduces new characters, both Clement and Waititi lend their creative talents behind the scenes. Waititi directs the pilot episode, while Clement directs the following three episodes. The pilot premieres at 10 p.m. ET.
“Million Dollar Mile” (CBS) at 9 p.m. ET
Have you ever thought you could outrun a professional athlete? CBS is giving you a shot at glory and a million dollars with their latest reality show. “Million Dollar Mile” pits contestants against elite athletes who will do whatever it takes to keep them from completing their mile and winning one million dollars. The streets of L.A. close down for these obstacle courses that separate the money-hungry from the weak. The show employs former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow as host, with Matt “Money” Smith and Maria Taylor as co-hosts. Will contestants be able to get past the professional defenders and win the prize money? Tune in to find out. The first of the show’s ten episode season airs tonight on CBS at 9 p.m. ET.
“Jane the Virgin” Season 5 (CW) at 9 p.m. ET
Virgin no more (as the title cards suggest), “Jane the Virgin” returns for its fifth and final season. Though the end is near, Jane (Gina Rodriguez) has plenty of questions to get through. This leads her back into the arms of Raphael (Justin Baldoni), though he may be putting some things on hold. Meanwhile, Petra (Yael Grobglas) finds her relationship with lawyer Jane “J.R.” (Rosario Dawson) flourishing. However, with this comes the fear her devilish past will ruin her future. The beginning of the end starts tonight on CW at 9 p.m. ET.
“Property Brothers: Buying & Selling” Season 8 (HGTV) at 9 p.m. ET
Looking to renovate your home? Want to move into a new place? You should get yourself brothers that can do both. “Property Brothers: Buying & Selling” splits brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott apart to accomplish renovating a house, selling said house and helping the former owner buy a new place. The show’s eighth season premiere finds the brothers helping a growing family looking for some more space. Tune in to HGTV at 9 p.m. ET for the latest new episodes.
“Happy!” Season 2 (Syfy) at 10 p.m. ET
Recent TV has been kind to the graphic novel. Tonight, Syfy airs the second season premiere for “Happy!,” based on writer Grant Morrison and artist Darick Robertson’s graphic novel of the same name. Sax (Christopher Meloni) begins season two clean of drugs and alcohol. However, filth just always seems to come back and haunt him. Season one of the show paired disgraced cop Nick Sax with Happy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) as a blue unicorn-like creature who sets him on a quest. The trippy, darkly comic Syfy original series returns at 10 p.m. ET tonight on Syfy.
Lifetime features a pair of reality competition season finales for tonight’s programming. Up first is “Project Runway All Stars” at 8:30 p.m. ET. The remaining designers will have to show their runway ready designs for the New York elite in the finale. Actress Andrea Risenborough joins judges Georgina Chapman and Isaac Mizrahi to crown the Season 7 winner tonight. After the 90 minute “Project Runway” finale, Lifetime presents the finale for “American Beauty Star” Season 2. This show takes it up a notch in its efforts to name a winner. The remaining three contestants fly to New York for a live show where the audience will be the judge. For those looking to get their reality TV fix, look no further than Lifetime.
MOVIES & SPECIALS ON TV
Rami Malek may have won Best Actor for “Bohemian Rhapsody” the musical biopic of Freddie Mercury. However, he’s far from the best performance of a music legend. Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett turn in career best performances as Ike and Tina Turner in 1993’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” The film does more than just provide a riveting story of two volatile performers. It’s a searing domestic drama centered around abuse. Don’t believe me? Tune in to Showtime Showcase at 7:30 p.m. and settle in for a classic biopic.
Looking for a more cheery movie about music? WE has an epic one-two punch for you tonight. “Sister Act” and “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” air back-to-back on WE, starting with the first film at 8 p.m. ET. The movie casts Whoopi Goldberg as a lounge singer placed in a convent by the witness protection program. The crowd-pleasing hit perfectly encapsulates what makes Goldberg such a talented comedienne. Had fun with the first movie? Stick around for the sequel, which starts at 10:22 p.m. ET. The sequel finds Goldberg’s Dolores cajoled back to her nun friends who enlist her to save her old school.
