The teaser trailer for the hotly anticipated “Joker” from director Todd Phillips starring Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix has dropped.
From Warner Bros. studios, the origin story of DC Comics’ most iconic villain and archnemesis to Batman, looks to be the DCEU’s most ambitious outing yet.
Alongside Phoenix, the film also stars Zazie Beetz (“Deadpool 2”), Brian Tyree Henry (“If Beale Street Could Talk”), Robert DeNiro (“Raging Bull”), Frances Conroy (“The Tale”), Marc Maron (“GLOW”), and Bill Camp (“The Night Of”).
Phoenix has been nominated for three Academy Awards, including his career-best work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master,” losing to Daniel Day-Lewis’ Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln.” Since then, he’s churned out memorable works in “Inherent Vice,” “Her,” and most recently “You Were Never Really Here.” Could he go the way of Heath Ledger, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in “The Dark Knight” in 2008?
Director Todd Phillips co-wrote the script with Scott Silver, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of “The Fighter.” Phillips, whose best known for helming some of the funniest comedies of the past 20 years including “Old School” and “The Hangover,” is taking on his most serious material yet. He’s also fresh off his first Oscar nomination as a producer for Bradley Cooper’s “A Star is Born.” The film won the Oscar for the hit song “Shallow” by Lady Gaga.
The talent behind the camera looks to be promising with music by Hildur Guðnadóttir, cinematography by Lawrence Sher, editing by Jeff Groth, and costume work from Mark Bridges.
The DC Extended universe has struggled to find its footing but with hits like “Wonder Woman” and “Aquaman” being well received, and already getting high marks for the soon-to-be-released “Shazam!,” the “Joker” could propel them to new heights.
