Reported exclusively by The Wrap, “Shazam!” writer Henry Gayden will be returning to write the script for the sequel.
“Shazam!” soared at the box office with a $53.5 million opening weekend and is now slated for a sequel. Director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran are also set to return.
From the article:
Henry Gayden, who wrote the screenplay for DC superhero movie “Shazam!” has been tapped to write the sequel for DC and New Line, an individual with knowledge of the situation has told TheWrap. The filmmaking team of David F. Sandberg and Peter Safran are also expected to return.
Henry Gayden worked on story and script for the 2014 Dave Green-directed sci-fi adventure, “Earth to Echo.” His upcoming project is the sci-fi film “Last Human,” which he will adapt from the Lee Bacon book. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directing.
The story of Shazam was created originally for DC Comics by C.C. Beck and Bill Parker. The film follows the story of a foster kid, Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who comes to possess the magical powers to turn himself into the fully grown hero, Shazam (Zachary Levi).
“Shazam!” currently sits at a nice 91% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes scoring. The film knocked “Pet Sematary” out of the yard and is leading at a considerably large distance from the Disney-adapted classic “Dumbo.” It is standing tall as the #1 movie at the worldwide box office right now and will presumably continue to climb as the weeks trek on.
The DC film stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody.
