A diverse set of options are in store for tonight’s television watching. These programs include two Oscar-winning horror films and “Foster,” a documentary on the foster care system. Meanwhile, the rivalries on the soap opera, “The Haves and the Have Nots” will resume. Here’s a closer look at what’s on TV.

PICK OF THE DAY:

“Foster” (HBO) at 8:00 PM EST

The HBO documentary “Foster” shines a spotlight on the Los Angeles foster care system, the largest child protective agency in America. Along with the foster parents that take children in, this documentary focuses on various others involved in child abuse cases including social workers and judges. It likely won’t be an easy watch, but it is vital and may be influential for anyone who is a parent.

WHAT’S RETURNING?:

“The Haves and the Have Nots” (OWN) at 9:00 PM EST

Queen Sugar” may be the most famous series on the OWN network, but the acclaimed soap opera “The Haves and the Have Nots” has its devoted following and is returning for its sixth season. The series handles issues ranging from race to class, following three feuding families. Two of the aforementioned families are the Cryers and Thompsons, white and affluent, with the third the Youngs, a poor black family. Tika Sumpter, who starred in “Nobody’s Fool” last year, plays Candace, the head of the Young family. As an added bonus,  Geoffrey Owens of “The Cosby Show” fame joins the cast.

MOVIES ON TV:

“Black Swan” (MOMAX) at 7:10 PM EST

Oscar and horror don’t always have the best relationship. Even if “Black Swan” isn’t a definitive horror film, it still orchestrates plenty of psychological scares and is a rare instance of scary movies receiving proper awards recognition thanks to Natalie Portman’s Best Actress win. Once Nina Sayers (Portman) lands the role of a lifetime in the famous ballet Swan Lake, she succumbs to spine-tingling paranoia when a new dancer (Mila Kunis) joins her ballet company. Psychological thrills may be a part of director Darren Aronofsky’s specialty, but “Black Swan” is his most crazed work and deserves a look.

“Get Out” (FX) at 7:30 PM EST

Jordan Peele has become a force within the industry and the horror genre in particular. Tonight, the film that originated his status as a scare maestro is on TV. The horror satire “Get Out” brilliantly exposes the evils of liberal racism. Additionally, the film became a box office juggernaut, grossing over $200 worldwide, and an awards player. When Peele won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, the filmmaker became the first African-American writer to do so. If you’re really in the mood for Oscar-winning horror films, this one’s a worthy watch.
