Today would have been Peter Mayhew‘s birthday. The late actor passed away on April 30, just a few weeks out from his 75th birthday. The towering British thespian will always be known for playing Chewbacca in George Lucas‘ genre-defining “Star Wars: A New Hope.” Though the passing of the acting giant is somber, today is a perfect opportunity to celebrate Mayhew.
Just a few days ago, the site paid tribute to Mayhew with a list of some of his best moments as Chewbacca. From the piece: “Recently, the world lost a legend: Peter Mayhew, the 7’2″ British actor who originated the role of Chewbacca in 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope.”The gentle giant imbued everyone’s favorite science fiction sidekick with an enormous heart and an incomparable sense of loyalty.” Few supporting characters in science fiction cut a more iconic instant figure than Mayhew did with Chewie. Taking his massive size, he brought life and empathy to a creature no matter the special effects surrounding the action.
Beyond his iconic performances as Chewbacca, Mayhew also was a celebrated author, penning two tomes for younger readers, “Growing Up Giant” and “My Favorite Giant,” focusing on the benefits of being unique, as well as an anti-bullying message. Mayhew took his unlikely stardom and made sure to make the world a better place.
To give Peter Mayhew one last moment in the sun, we’re asking for your fond memories of the actor. Was it one of his turns as Chewie? An interview he gave? Anything will suffice in giving the actor his due. We’re all ears!
