BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
PREDICTIONS BY: CLAYTON DAVIS
And the Predicted Five Are...(in order)
Carey Mulligan- An Education
Meryl Streep- Julie & Julia
Gabourey Sidibe- Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire
Helen Mirren- The Last Station
Abbie Cornish- Bright Star
FOR HER: British drama. Newcomers are rewarded often for their breakthrough roles. Sure to be a big critic darling.
FOR HER: Biopic role, Julia Child. She has the most nominations ever but also has the most losses. That helps. Early year rave along with a sure to be critical rave for It's Complicated.
FOR HER: A heartbreaking performance that the critics are all behind. A dark horse for the prize? Think Jennifer Hudson.
FOR HER: Decent reviews out of Toronto. Period piece. Previous winner. Playing a real life character.
FOR HER: Period piece. Stand out reviews. This year's Keira Knightley?
AGAINST HER: Oscar can make the newcomers wait.
AGAINST HER: Oscar goes on a Meryl break every now and then. There's talk about her switching Supporting.
AGAINST HER: This is her breakthrough role, will they reward her so soon? If they're going to reward a newcomer, Mulligan will be it.
AGAINST HER: She's won her Oscar for The Queen. Does she need two?
AGAINST HER: The film got mixed reviews. She'll be fighting for a spot with 4 or 5 other ladies.
Changes to the top five include the drop of Saoirse Ronan (for now) and the rise of Abbie Cornish. Mulligan still sits in the top spot but I have to say, I have no idea who will win. It could be any of them for all I know. Streep is definitely in the running and Mirren is a dark horse. Sidibe is a 50/50 shot for a nomination, which she deserves, but there are a lot of other big names creeping up and fast. New addition: Melanie Laurent in Inglourious Basterds, which is likely known as the stupidest move of any categorization this season.

Saoirse Ronan- The Lovely Bones
Maggie Gyllenhaal- Crazy Heart
Sandra Bullock- The Blind Side
Michelle Monaghan- Trucker
FOR HER: A previous nominee for Atonement. A beautiful LEAD turn as a beloved character in a beloved story.
FOR HER: A co-lead turn with Jeff Bridges. With him "scheduled" to win, she can get pulled into the mix along with him. Previous snubs.
FOR HER: Getting best-in-show reviews. Her supporting turn in Public Enemies helps. In one of the Best Picture frontrunners.
FOR HER: A beloved actress never nominated. Getting great reviews. A surprise entry?
FOR HER: LEAD role in a small indie film getting a big campaign push. This year's Melissa Leo?
AGAINST HER: Depends on how the rest of the critics and audiences receive the film.
AGAINST HER: She needs just as good of reviews as Bridges.
AGAINST HER: Many consider the categorization fraud, that hurts her chances big time.
AGAINST HER: The film's reviews aren't as good as her performance.
AGAINST HER: Her film is really small and many voters may not get to see it.
