Kathryn Bigelow-
The Hurt Locker
Jason Reitman-
Up in the Air
Rob Marshall-
Nine
Lee Daniels-
Precious: Based on the
Novel 'Push' by Sapphire
Clint Eastwood-
Invictus
FOR HER:
Directed one of the best
reviewed films of the year.
It's about time a woman
wins this.  A lot of
contenders falling off.
FOR HIM:
Directs a beautiful mix of
drama and comedy.
Previously nominated for
Juno.  Rewarding him, they
also reward his father,
never nominated.
FOR HIM:
The loss for
Chicago still
stings.  Directing a big cast
of A-listers doing good
work keeps him in voter's
minds.
FOR HIM:
The minority prejudice in
this category works in his
favor.
Precious has
received many great
reviews.
FOR HIM:
An Academy favorite.  Still
at the top of his game.
After missing for
Gran
Torino
and Changeling, they
may want to make up for it.
AGAINST HER:
Jason Reitman and Rob
Marshall.  Needs the critics
awards too.
AGAINST HIM:
Comedy directors hardly
win.
AGAINST HIM:
The film's so-so reviews.
Copycatting his
Chicago
work.  Needs #1 votes.
AGAINST HIM:
Subject matter a bit too
heavy.  There may still be
that prejudice.
AGAINST HIM:
Rewarded for so many of
his works in his later
career.
THOUGHTS:
Still have Kathryn Bigelow to win and make history for her war film, The Hurt Locker.  Jason Reitman remains her competition for now along with
Nine's director Rob Marshall.  Lee Daniels is vulnerable considering Precious was missing from NBR.  Clint Eastwood joins the list but is also
vulnerable considering if James Cameron's Avatar hits it out of the park.  He'll be replacing someone.  The Coens are still in the hunt with Lone
Scherfig who's looking for someway to break through the top five.  The new addition is Oren Moverman for The Messenger considering it was
mentioned by NBR, it would be a lone director type recognition.
THE NEXT FIVE
James Cameron-
Avatar
Joel Coen & Ethan Coen-
A Serious Man
Lone Scherfig-
An Education
Quentin Tarantino-
Inglourious Basterds
Michael Hoffman-
The Last Station
FOR HIM:
The secret behind the film
is still looming.  If it's half
as good as the promise, he
can sneak in.
FOR THEM:
Hitting all their films out of
the park every time now.
Academy friendly subject.
Still good-will off No
Country for Old Men.
FOR HER:
The film's performers are
all in the hunt for a
nomination, they may give
her all the credit.
FOR HIM:
Nominated for
Pulp Fiction.
Changing history to an
acceptable altering that
voters could appreciate.
FOR HIM:
A period work.  Isn't as
popular as other directors
but giving solid work every
time.
AGAINST HIM:
The lingering story of
plagiarism may cost him if
voters agree.  If the film
doesn't deliver, he's out.
AGAINST THEM:
They may score the writing
award before they nab
another directing.
AGAINST HER:
The work isn't as
challenging as her
competitors.
AGAINST HIM:
He is an acquired taste
amongst audiences.  Needs
everyone to be on the same
page.
AGAINST HIM:
Small release and small
film standing next to big
contenders.
