The Nominees

David Fincher-The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Sam Mendes-Revolutionary Road Baz Luhrmann-Australia Gus Van Sant-Milk John Hillcoat-The Road
FOR HIM: The visual spectacle that Benjamin Button seems to be might be rewarded with overdue Fincher joining the race. FOR HIM: Bringing one of the most acclaimed novels of modern time to the big screen is no easy task.  If he succeeds, the Academy may jump to reward him. FOR HIM: Baz is quite an artistic director with a very creative eye.  Some argue he should have won already.  Could this be the one that gets him to the big leagues? FOR HIM: Directing a very controversial film that will keep people talking.  Maybe the Academy will look on him as the next big winner. FOR HIM: He could our new face that the Academy welcomes.
AGAINST HIM: He can entertain his audience but can he move them?  It'll need to be a unanimous grand slam. AGAINST HIM:  On a steady decline of his former masterpiece and relationship dramas a hard sell for the big prize. AGAINST HIM: Always argued that its style over content.  Did people really want to give him the statue for Moulin Rouge!? They didn't even nominate him. AGAINST HIM: He's an acquired taste for some, (Last Days) that the Academy may not get just yet. AGAINST HIM: Unknown status and very dark material.
Don't Count Out
Christopher Nolan-The Dark Knight Clint Eastwood-The Exchange Edward Zwick-Defiance Mike Leigh-Happy Go Lucky Spike Lee-Miracle at St. Anna
FOR HIM: His film is taking movie-goers by storm.  The Academy may feel like rewarding him for revolutionizing the superhero genre.  FOR HIM: Europe says its another hit for Clint, and he also has Gran Torino. FOR HIM: An accomplished producer but has yet been embraced in this category.  This Jewish-Holocaust era film may do the trick. FOR HIM: Could be our lone director of the year yet again.  He should be winning an Oscar someday... FOR HIM: I feel Spike Lee will get his long overdue recognition someday.  Could this be the right time?
AGAINST HIM: If they're going let The Dark Knight in a big 8 category, Ledger might just be it.  I think it'll be either the directing nod or the Picture nod for the film, not both. AGAINST HIM: Been around too much lately, may be overkill. AGAINST HIM: He's never been considered a big snub or an outstanding director to some.  Maybe producing is his gift. AGAINST HIM: Lone directors don't win.  He needs his film to be a hit all-around. AGAINST HIM: It doesn't seem right especially with the outbursts to the Academy poster boy Clint Eastwood.  Maybe he won't win ever.

 SUMMING IT UP:

The big names are what usually take prominence but watch out for any newbie or unseen contender to swoop and take the Awards Circuit by storm.  Mendes, Luhrmann, and Fincher are the likely frontrunners with Christopher Nolan suspected to make a hit.  Scott will need his film to be a big hit all around which the trailer doesn't suggest.  Gus Van Sant comes back into the race, with John Hillcoat joining the lineup.
