Forgive me everyone, I was wrong — this week on The Voice was in fact the best of the season thus far. If someone from Teams Cee Lo and Adam doesn’t end up winning, the sanity of America has got to be called into question. In a night where five performers left it all out on that stage, only three singers missed the mark, and two of them were rightfully sent home by their coaches because of their minor misfires. The six that remain are all pretty spectacular in their own way, and honestly…as I’m typing this, I’m still not quite sure who will take first for the night. I have three contestants whirling around in my head, but as I dig deep into each performance, perhaps the answer will come to me! Let’s ride this elevator down to some review sessions… Read more on ‘The Voice’ Recap: Quarterfinals Part 2…

It’s Motown week on Dancing with the Stars. What makes this week different from any other week is the legends of Motown are performing on the Dancing stage for the stars to dance to. It was one of the best nights so far on Dancing with the Stars. Also, another addition to the show Monday night was the Motown dance marathon, where the stars danced for four minutes for the oppurtunity to earn extra points.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus gamely portrays a bumbling Vice President in HBO’s new series ‘Veep’, a biting and potentially good political satire that’s not always as funny as it should be. Created by Armando Iannucci and Simon Blackwell of ‘In the Loop’ fame, this is similar stuff to that film, only not always with the same edge to it. Future episodes could get this show there, but right now it’s an entertaining yet mixed bag of a comedy, especially this pilot episode. Personally, I prefer Lena Dunham’s show ‘Girls’ (both the pilot and the second episode, which is just as good), but that’s just me (though to balance things out, I prefer ‘In the Loop’ to ‘Tiny Furniture’), and they’re two different animals. Iannucci and Blackwell have found a subject and a character well worth exploring, so I’m more than willing to overlook the small-ish flaws that keep the show from being as good as I was hoping for. That being said, there’s plenty of things to like here, and I’m very hopeful that this is possibly the low point of the series, and if that’s true, we’ll have something very clever and enjoyable on Sunday nights going forward. The pilot may not be a world beater, but it suggests a strong show to come if they correct the one or two issues I found. I can’t guarantee anything, but I expect good times to be ahead.

This coming week, the American Idol top six will be covering songs from the amazing 70′s/80′s glam rock band, the one…the only…Queen! It’s kind of disappointing that Colton will not be available to perform these songs this week, seeing as how his emo-punk style fits right in line with Freddie Mercury’s flair for the dramatic rock fashionista. Formed in 1971, Queen reinvented what it meant to be a “rock n’ roll” band, adding a texture of opera to their music and championing themselves as pioneers of the “glam rock” genre in the process. Their songs will forever be ingrained in music history, and I personally cannot wait to see what these talented Top Six Idols will do with such legendary tracks. As always, I’m offering some advice for each of the remaining contestants in the hopes that they’ll use my suggestions as a means of moving on to the next week without a trip to the Bottom Three. Without further ado, let’s take a look at what I have in store for the Top Six… Read more on ‘American Idol’ Queen Theme Week: Song Suggestions…

Wow, I am speechless. Last night may have been one of the greatest telecasts of American Idol I have ever seen. Every single contestant had the bare minimum of one stellar performance on “Now and Then” theme night. Sure, there’s always the occasional bump or two in the road, but with voices like these, who needs The Voice? I kid, I kid! To top things off, we had a comeback I was not expecting, and I may have just changed favorites in the course of a single evening (I’m forever going to empathize with wishy-washy politicians). Because the Top 7 are singing two songs this week, my breakdown will still be a ranking, but an average between the two performances. Let’s not waste another second! Below is my review session for the Top 7 Redux… Read more on ‘American Idol’ Recap: Reviewing the Top 7 Redux…

Good job voters, we’re friends again. If u missed my review of Dancing with the Stars last night, I made it quite clear I was upset with you all for putting Roshon Fegan in the bottom two. But you did well this week.

I’ve been trying to watch a bit more television these days, and it seems that whenever a new show catches my interest, it’s invariable on HBO, with ‘Girls’ being no exception. Aside from AMC’s ‘Comic Book Men’, the premium channel appears to be one of the few that I go to for new programming. Next week’s ‘Veep’ has my attention, and I’m very eager to see ‘The Newsroom’ this summer, but for now, I only have the union between Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow to try out, and so far ‘Girls’ is humorously awkward in almost all of the right ways. It’s as if Dunham’s film ‘Tiny Furniture’ had been directed by Apatow and filtered somewhat sarcastically through the ‘Sex and the City’ lens, yet despite that description, it’s incredibly original. It isn’t always perfectly on the mark, but when it hits, you can’t help but giggle. Much like the main character claims to be “the voice of my generation, or at least a voice of a generation”, this show is looking to be a realistic take on being a mid 20′s woman living in New York City. The pilot episode sets things up nicely, pretty much allowing the show to go wherever it pleases in the coming weeks. Apatow and Dunham are definitely on to something here and they certainly have me hooked.

Alright, we need to talk. I get it, Sherri Shepherd wasn’t the greatest dancer and I’m surprised she didn’t make it further because of her relationship with ABC, but my issue is Disney star Roshon Fegan being placed in the bottom two. What are you doing?! The kid, a bit annoying, is one of the best dancers on the show and you’re just letting him get away! We are not friends right now. You earn your way back into my heart by eliminating someone who should be eliminated Tuesday night.
Nevertheless, I can’t stay mad forever because we need to discuss tonight’s dancing. Latin night brought some of the best dances of the season and definitely caused peoples blood pressure to rise in excitement. Let’s review. Read more on Dancing with the Stars: Week 5…
The Quarterfinals kicked off last night on The Voice, and I am pleased to report that this was the best week of the live rounds thus far. Sure, no one completely knocked my socks off the way that Charlotte Sometimes (why isn’t she still around?) and Juliet Simms did the past two weeks, but as an entire body of work, most every performance from Teams Blake and Christina had me engaged in some manner. More than anything else this week, it was Christina Aguilera who blew me away as a judge. I am sure her shocking instant elimination will have people up in arms decrying cruelty, jealousy, and who knows what other slanderous comments. Her decision proved to me that she is someone who is not phased by America, instead pushing forth the best team possible. Christina’s brutal honesty and unwavering convictions instantly shoots her up as my favorite singing show judge on television. Would I have eliminated the person Christina shockingly chose to cut? No, but I wouldn’t have anointed them an undeserving frontrunner crown either. All said, it was a great night, with two fairly correct eliminations, and a heck of a show with performances that finally entertained without looking like Barnum and Bailey stopped by. Without further ado, here is my full review disclosure… Read more on ‘The Voice’ Recap: Quarterfinals Part 1…

The American Idol Top 7 attempted to rise to the challenge of showcasing their modern skills, but unfortunately quite a few missed the mark. Other than one special individual’s selection, I wouldn’t call any song choice last night particularly indicative of the the future musical path we’re likely to see from some of these contestants post-Idol. Some choices were bizarre, some I have never even heard of (color me shocked), and one was foolishly rehashed from a golden moment in Season Ten. In all, this was two weeks in a row that I’ve felt pretty disappointed with the performances. It hurt deeper this week knowing that there were some great selections to be made from the past few years, but hardly anyone jumped on the meatier choices that would turn the internet ablaze. So without further ado, I give you my review session that’s just a jump away…

Week four of Dancing with the Stars was by far the weakest week so far. Week after week the stars are showing their true colors on the dance floor, and we’re beginning to see those that will make it far and those that won’t. Week four brought a new leader on the dance floor and some unexciting dances. But Dancing with the Stars excited us this week in its results show saving two stars that were predicted to be in the bottom two, ultimately landing two stars, who people anticipated would make it far in the competition, in the bottom two.
So who goes home…

Um…wow. Okay, how do I start this recap of The Voice without sounding like a complete troll? I’ll admit, maybe my expectations for Teams Adam and Cee Lo were perhaps a bit high, but even I wasn’t prepared for the substandard delivery from the majority of contestants last night. Yes, as a whole I thought this group was superior to last week’s teams, but individually I thought Lindsey Pavao and Charlotte Sometimes were far more impressive than anyone who sang yesterday evening. America has a funny way of sticking it to me, as Charlotte Sometimes was placed in the Bottom 3, then unjustly sent home by Blake Shelton last Tuesday. America: Dumb. Blake Shelton: Dumber. So besides Lindsey Pavao, and maybe a few others last night, there aren’t a whole lot of contestants to root for. The good thing is that no one is a certified frontrunner at this point, but neither is anyone close to the incredible Top 4 we had last season, consisting of Vicki Martinez, Beverly McClellan, Dia Frampton, and winner Javier Colon. What started off as a promising season has transpired into some kind of nightmare. I hope sweet dreams will follow, but maybe that’s wishing thinking. Below is the countdown, listing the performers from worst to first as per my usual trend. Read more on ‘The Voice’ Recap: Live Rounds Part 2…

America’s votes have been decided, forming our official Top 7 on American Idol as a result. This week, the remaining seven contestants will be singing songs from this decade: 2010, 2011, and 2012. I have to admit, I’m slightly worried. Besides a few select records, are there enough great songs out there for our Idols to choose from that would have as powerful a punch on the big Idol stage without the magical force that is auto-tune? On the flip side, we’ve heard enough Adele renditions to last us a lifetime on Idol, so fingers crossed the mentors chuck Adele’s name out the window if some brazen contestants throw her name into the suggestion pile. I love Adele as much as anyone, but we can’t tarnish her special individuality as an artist by letting every contestant turn her into one smelly recycling bin. Mentors, please let the Adele recycling bin odor dissipate for at least a year until it smells brand new. With that piece of advice behind us, let’s jump right into my song suggestions for Idol‘s Top 7! Read more on ‘American Idol’ “Songs From This Decade” Theme Week: Song Suggestions…

The Top 8 on American Idol did their best to cover a wacky and wild decade for music, AKA The 80s. While some had hits, there wasn’t a single performance I would rewind for very long. Oh sure, two in particular definitely threw down the gauntlet but in sum, the songs overshadowed the talent many of the contestants have in spades. I even thought the song choices were a bit bizarre, except for my song choice of course. Why, if my ego wasn’t big enough already after having three out of the four performance weeks showcase one of my song suggestions, Hollie has to go out and perform the song I gave her, “Flashdance…What a Feeling.” If Hollie leaves tonight, I’ll have to be sure to never encounter a Hollipop fan on the streets. I’d be a dead man walking, no doubt. Moving away from my banter, let’s jump right into some review sessions, shall we? Read more on ‘American Idol’ Recap: Reviewing the Top 8…

If there’s one thing I won’t be able to stress enough about the new Broadway drama hit Smash, is that it’s well, a smash. Many may be hesitant towards watching the show because they may think it’s similar to Glee, but trust me, the only similarity is the music, but even that’s better than Glee.

These past few weeks of Dancing with the Stars have been mighty impressive and I sure have enjoyed watching, but its Tuesday which means someone has to go home.
Monday night, singer Katherine Jenkins remained on the top of the heap scoring the first 10s of the season while there was a five way tie for last place. I predicted in my recap that Gavin DeGraw would be the next star eliminated. But could America
save him and make an unpredictable elimination?

The Live Rounds kicked off this week on The Voice, and after one show I’m already missing my beloved Idol. This is not to say all twelve performers were bad, simply that it’s become apparent how much more exciting Teams Cee Lo and Adam are compared to Teams Christina and Blake, who were all somewhat low-key last night. Aside from three performers, there wasn’t really all that much I could praise. If I sound like a hater, you have me mistaken for somebody else. I’ve been commenting on this show’s high quality for weeks, but this performance night just didn’t measure up to Idol’s standards. Take a look after the jump to see the countdown from worst to best performances. My lineup may surprise you.

It’s week three of Dancing with the Stars and Monday night brought us stories of triumph, emotion and memories. After last year’s emotional night, the cast of season 14 had big shoes to fill, but to be honest, the night wasn’t as emotionally gripping as I hoped it would be. Although, the night had its surprises when two of the celebrities scored the first 10s of the season, something we don’t normally see until much later into season. But with so many emotional dances Monday night, someone has to get sent home. Let’s review.

This week, American Idol’s Top 8 will be covering songs from the 80s! That was a decade of emerging dance beats, pop slowly redefining its sound, and multiple genres equally dominating the charts. For this group of contestants, I couldn’t think of a more appropriately diverse theme for the Top 8 to tackle, with career-defining song choices aplenty. So without further ado, take a look after the jump to see what yours truly has to suggest from one of the most memorable decades in music! Winter is near, and war is at hand! Kings clash with sword and sorcery for the realm while the tricksters in the shadows pull their invisible strings of control. So begins Season Two of HBO’s riveting fantasy saga, Game of Thrones. Unlike last season’s “Pilot” episode of GoT, which was slow in parts despite a hell of a suspenseful prologue, this premiere has a pace faster than you can blink. While this may seem to detract from the series’ character development, the writing is so tight and deeply accurate for each individual figure in the story that merely by a few lines of dialogue, you’ll have a quick and definitive understanding of who each of these players are without confusion. Even more so, the faster pace gives us all enough time to regroup with each subplot that we saw come to a head in last summer’s cliffhanger finale. Somehow, writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss don’t just rehash old news like any book sequel tends to do at the beginning. After dispensing briefly with a retelling of prior events, Benioff and Weiss set their sights instead on laying out the fundamental groundwork for how the rest of the intriguing season is going to play out. This is why “The North Remembers” may be the best Game of Thrones episode aside from Season One, Episode Nine’s jaw-dropping “Baelor.” There is nothing quite like a premiere episode which fulfills every desire left from the previous finale while simultaneously making us thirsty for the rest of the season.
