On the agenda:

* The Oscars were revealed and there was plenty to digest.
* “Green Book” won 3 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, and Original Screenplay.  Film Twitter (and some on staff) are very unhappy.
* “The Favourite” didn’t do as well as we thought it would but it did upset in Best Actress with Olivia Colman winning over presumed lock Glenn Close (“The Wife”).
* Rami Malek won an Oscar for “Bohemian Rhapsody” and we look at his win against history moving forward.
* Regina King is an Academy Award winner and life is good.
* Spike Lee is an Academy Award winner and life is good.
* “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” did it in the end and we couldn’t be happier.
* “Black Panther” showed strength and might have been closer to a Best Picture win than we think.
* Every Best Picture nominee won an Oscar, and what does this new Academy look like when spreading the wealth?
* What are our picks for Oscars 2020 Best Picture?  Year-In-Advanced guesses happen.

On the agenda:

* The final Oscar Predictions for Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony is unleashed.  We discuss all the winners including:
* Best Picture: Is it still a race between “Green Book” or “Roma” or is something else coming up the middle?
* Best Director: Seems made for Alfonso Cuaron but could Spike Lee pull a last-minute switcheroo?
* Best Actor: Rami Malek has a lot of big wins but is Bradley Cooper pulling an Adrien Brody at the last minute?
* Best Actress: Does Olivia Colman‘s win at BAFTA have the juice to turn the tides her way from Glenn Close?
* Best Supporting Actor: Can Mahershala Ali lose and who can he lose to?
* Best Supporting Actress: Most wide open acting race where almost any of the ladies can win it in the end?  Did BAFTA give us a hint with Rachel Weisz?
* Screenplay categories: With WGA going their own way, what does this mean in this wide open field?
* Tech categories: Some categories seem locked (Song), others are still in flux (almost all of them?).  How many is the Best Picture winner going to win?
* Animated, Docs, Foreign, and Shorts: Some seem solidified but this new Academy can do some strange things.

On the agenda:

* We talk about an old Oscar category (that can still be activated) and what the nominees and winners would be.
* What is the strongest Best Actor lineup since the 2000s?
* We rank a list of actors and actresses that are most likely to win an Oscar in their careers.
* The BAFTA winners have been announced where “Roma” prevailed over “The Favourite” (which was the favorite with the group).  What do these winners mean to the Oscar race and will the Academy pay special attention for their own choices?
* What are some of the staff’s predictions going into this final Oscar voting round?  Can “Roma” triumph over “Green Book” or can “The Favourite” or “BlacKkKlansman” come up the middle?  Can the SAG Ensemble win bring “Black Panther” to a historic win without acting, writing, or editing?

* Fresh off the Screen Actors Guild awards, we are talking about all the winners where “Black Panther” took the top prize for Cast Ensemble.  The individual acting categories went to Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”), and Emily Blunt (“A Quiet Place”).  Did three races lock themselves up?  Did Blunt’s win mean wonders for Regina King?
* Oscars are having their worst PR year ever, with the news that they will only have 2 songs performed at the ceremony, Lady Gaga (“Shallow” from “A Star is Born”) and Kendrick Lamar (“All the Stars” from “Black Panther”).  Is it time for John Bailey to move on?
* The 2018 Awards Circuit Community Awards are being announced where “A Star is Born” leads the charge with 13 nominations with “The Favourite” behind with 12.  Are they any surprises decided by the readers?

On the agenda:

* This is a special edition of the Circuit Breaker podcast.  Host Clayton Davis is joined by Emmy Award winner Jenelle Riley, Awards and Features Editor of Variety, along with Erik Anderson, founder, and editor of AwardsWatch.
* Looking at the Oscar nominations from Tuesday from different perspectives, more notably the reactions from the different coasts, we’re discussing the surprises and exclusions in the major categories.
* Beginning with our feelings about the nominations announcement.  Did it work and why was John Bailey missing?
* Best Picture produced eight nominees this year and only three of them have the “right” nominations to win the top prize but is it that simple?
* “BlacKkKlansman” from Spike Lee is showing strength despite the miss for John David Washington in Best Actor.  Is it the frontrunner?
* “A Star is Born” and “Green Book” missed out key mentions despite being touted as frontrunners and now “Roma” seems to have the momentum.  How does it shake out with DGA and BAFTA on the horizon?
* “The Favourite” has 10 nominations, tied for the most of the night.  Is there a road for it in the top category?
* There could be a default four-person acting winners club: Christian Bale (“Vice”), Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”), and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”).  But not so fast…the SAG Awards are this weekend and could throw a wrench in the works.

On the agenda:

* It’s that time!  The annual “FINAL” Oscar Predictions podcast.  The entire team is on discussing all the categories with an emphasis on some of the most wide open races.
* How many Best Picture nominees will there be?  Is there a “Phantom Thread” in the works?
* How diverse will our Best Director lineup be, and is there room for a Ben Affleck-level type snub?
* Did SAG get most of the acting races correct?  Can the vulnerable John David Washington (“BlacKkKlansman”), Emily Blunt (“Mary Poppins Returns”), Timothee Chalamet (“Beautiful Boy”), or Melissa McCarthy hold on?
* Supporting Actress is in flux, and we just don’t know who is on the table anymore of the nine contenders.  Is there room for Thomasin McKenzie (“Leave No Trace”) to surprise?
* The screenplay races seem to both have six contenders vying for five spots.  Usually, that means, two big ones missing in each.
* The tech races are always a question mark, but with the bakeoffs announcing, we have a bit more guidance.  Film Editing remains the most challenging race to predict, and we may be foreseeing a 2 or 3 film overlap in the sound categories.

Only four scores into his career, he’s considered one of the best in the business. That he’s done it while only working with filmmaker ... Hurwitz won Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for his work on “La La Land.” Prior to that, he had contributed original scores for Chazelle works “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench” as well as “Whiplash.”
Now, he sees himself on the Oscar circuit yet again for the Neil Armstrong biopic “First Man,” Chazelle’s latest technical marvel. Hurwitz’s unique sounds and ability to work flawlessly with Chazelle are once again in evidence here. In fact, just a few days ago, the score received a Golden Globe.
First Man” stars Ryan Gosling as Armstrong, the stoic astronaut who would be the first man ever to walk on the surface of the moon. As he prepares for that dangerous mission, he deals with a complicated family situation at home. Tragedy touches his life and makes Armstrong even more determined not to fail in space, even if he’s failing here on Earth.
The film also stars Kyle Chandler, Jason Clarke, Claire Foy, Corey Stoll, and many more.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Hurwitz about his work on “First Man,” as well as his unique collaboration with Chazelle. We also got into how he first got interested in music, how he approaches composing scores, and much more.
We hope you’ll enjoy this conversation with Justin Hurwitz.
“First Man” is distributed by Universal Pictures and is in theaters now. It hits Blu-Ray and DVD on January 22nd.

The second is a narrative feature from director Mimi Leder. Written by the nephew of Ruth and Martin Ginsburg, the film tells the story of the only case the two renowned attorneys ever argued together, Moretz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue. “On the Basis of Sex” stars Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Cailee Spaeny, Justin Theroux, Sam Waterston, Stephen Root, and Kathy Bates.
We recently had the chance to talk with two members of the film’s production crew: Costume Designer Isis Mussenden and Production Designer Nelson Coates.
Mussenden’s credits include an eclectic list of titles from “Albino Alligator” to “The Wolverine.” She follows up “On the Basis of Sex” with a highly anticipated Netflix acquisition, “Velvet Buzzsaw,” the latest from Dan Gilroy.
Coates also worked with Mussenden on “Albino Alligator” in 1996. Two years earlier, he earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for his work on the infamous television miniseries “The Stand” in 1994. Following “On the Basis of Sex,” he will be working on a television series with John M. Chu. He is also signed on for the highly anticipated adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights.”
Please enjoy these conversations with Isis Mussenden and Nelson Coates.

Awards Circuit would like to thank Isis Mussenden and Nelson Coates for discussing their work.

Written by Ginsburg’s nephew, Daniel Stiepleman, it tells the story of the only case the Justice ever argued alongside her husband Martin. The narrative focuses on Ginsburg’s years at Harvard Law School, the constant roadblocks trying to find a job after graduation, and the central case, Moretz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue. But the story is really about the Ginsburgs as a progressive couple, who fought publicly for the equality they shared at home.
Mimi Leder has directed films and television for years. In 1998, she directed “Deep Impact,” which became the highest grossing film directed by a woman. She earned Emmy nominations for “China Beach” and “The West Wing,” and won two for her work on “ER.” She also produced and directed the critically acclaimed series “The Leftovers” for HBO.
Felicity Jones stars as Ruth Ginsburg. She previously earned an Oscar nomination for “The Theory of Everything” before launching into superstardom as Jyn Erso in “Rogue One.”
Armie Hammer is the gregarious Martin Ginsburg. His breakthrough role came when he starred as both Winklevoss in “The Social Network” in 2010. Last year, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in “Call Me By Your Name.”
Justin Theroux reunites with his “The Leftovers” boss. He has also starred in both film and television, with roles in “American Psycho,” “The Girl on the Train,” and “The Spy Who Dumped Me.”
Cailee Spaeny made her feature film debut early in 2018 with a leading role in “Pacific Rim: Uprising.” She also starred in “Bad Times at the El Royale” in the fall. After “On the Basis of Sex,” she is working on Alex Garland’s new original TV series.
Please enjoy this collection of interviews with the writer, director, and cast of “On the Basis of Sex.”

He has worked with Ridley Scott, Ron Howard, Christopher Nolan, and many more of the best-known directors in Hollywood. Zimmer won an Academy Award for his original score on the beloved Disney classic “The Lion King” in 1994. Disney tapped him again to work on the live-action adaptation due next year. He also earned nominations for “Rain Man,” “The Prince of Egypt,” “Gladiator,” and last year’s “Dunkirk.”
He has also scored video games, commercials, and recently worked on the documentary series “Blue Planet II.”
In 2013, he joined forces with Steve McQueen on “12 Years a Slave,” which would go on to win Best Picture that year. They worked so well together that they reunited for “
Widows,” adapted from Lynda LaPlante’s groundbreaking miniseries.
“Widows” stars Viola Davis as Veronica Rawlings, a wealthy Chicago woman whose world collapses after her criminal husband (Liam Neeson) is killed in a standoff with police. It seems her husband stole money from some very bad people who want it back. So Ronnie gathers together the other widows of her husband’s gang to pull off the heist they couldn’t.
The film also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Rodriguez, Carrie Coon, Jacki Weaver, Colin Farrell, Daniel Kaluuya, and Brian Tyree Henry.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Zimmer about his work on “Widows,” and his collaboration with Steve McQueen. We also talked about why this film is sure to resonate with audiences, and I learned some surprising details about his early life and career.
We hope you’ll enjoy this conversation with Hans Zimmer.
Widows” is distributed by 20th Century Fox and is in theaters now.

Some of their most popular songs include “Would I Lie to You?” and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). Lennox moved on to a successful solo career with songs like “Walking on Broken Glass” and “No More I Love Yous,” winning Grammys along the way. She won the Academy Award for her Original Song “Into the West” from “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” in 2003.
In 2008, she launched The Circle, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting women around the world. Their work involves education to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, developing women as entrepreneurs, and ending human trafficking. The Circle is globally recognized for its humanitarian work, and Lennox herself has earned multiple humanitarian awards for her efforts.
Now, Lennox is back with an original song, “Requiem For A Private War” from Matthew Heineman‘s new film. “A Private War” tells the story of war correspondent Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike), whose work took her into war zones in Africa and the Middle East from the 80s until 2012. The film also stars Jamie Dornan, Tom Hollander, and Stanley Tucci.
We would like to thank Annie Lennox for speaking with Awards Circuit about her work. You can listen to the full song, “Requiem For A Private War” here:

“A Private War” is distributed by Aviron Pictures and is in theaters now.

On the agenda:

* Opening this past weekend was the poorly received “Venom” and the perceived awards juggernaut “A Star is Born.”  In the case of the latter, does it have the energy to deemed not only the frontrunner but win a ton of Oscars?  Is Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga the frontrunners for the acting categories?
* SPOILER ALERT for “A Star is Born” begins at 20:00 and lasts essentially the entire episode but there is plenty of stuff sprinkled in that is non-spoilery.  Enter at your own risk.
* NYFF premiered “Roma” from Alfonso Cuaron, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” from Joel & Ethan Coen, and “Private Life” from Tamara Jenkins.
* We’re talking about the dark horses in the acting categories.  Who are the people we’re not talking about…yet?
* The Best Documentary Feature race is hot.  What can make some noise?

* There’s an internal debate about the Supporting Actor race and how thin or heavy it is with contenders.  Does Sam Elliott (“A Star is Born”) have a real fighting chance or are we gearing up for a Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) second Oscar soon?
* “Green Book” won the Audience Award at TIFF.  What’s next for the Peter Farrelly film?  Is it the Best Picture spoiler?
* From a good question from one of our readers Josh Parham, we discuss some candidates for an Honorary Oscar.  Who would you like to see?
* Rachel Weisz is getting a Gotham Award tribute.  Does that help her for “The Favourite” or “Disobedience?”
* Talking about our thoughts on Yann Demange’s “White Boy Rick.”
* Cynthia Erivo already seems like an Oscar frontrunner for when the Harriet Tubman film opens in theaters.
* Henry Cavill is out as Superman.  Do any of us care?
