LEAD ACTOR

COMMENTARY:

This is one of the most exciting races of the bunch.  George Clooney won at the Critics Choice and Golden Globe awards.  Jean Dujardin won the SAG.  Brad Pitt is still very much on the table and has won his fair share of awards (New York).  Gary Oldman has his entire career under his belt and after FINALLY scoring an Oscar nomination, the actors may feel inclined to reward him accordingly.  Demian Bichir had the uphill climb of just being nominated and after that, unfortunately the nomination will be the reward.  This will change often until the actual ceremony.  For today, these are what they are:

POSITION

AND THE NOMINATED MEN ARE..

1 Jean Dujardin for “The Artist”
2 George Clooney for “The Descendants”
3 Gary Oldman for “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”
4 Brad Pitt for “Moneyball”
5 Demian Bichir for “A Better Life”

FOR HIM:
Won the BFCA, Golden Globe, and a dozen other awards.  Many citing it’s the performance of his career.  Is it his time again?

FOR HIM:
One of his best performances yet.  As his other performance in “The Tree of Life” that gives him some flavor.  Many want to see him win.

FOR HIM:
Won Golden Globe.  In the Best Picture frontrunner.  Likable character for a likable actor.  One of the year’s best turns.

FOR HIM:
Delivered in not just one, but four performances this year.  His work in “Shame” his is best of the year.  Has the Globe and BFCA support.

FOR HIM:
Won Austin, Chicago, and San Diego.  Runner Up in Los Angeles.  Surprised for “Revolutionary Road.”  History repeat?

AGAINST HIM:
He’s won before.  Pitt and Dujardin very close behind.

AGAINST HIM:
Besides the New York Award, hasn’t won anything significant yet.  Needs SAG win.

AGAINST HIM:
Not as well known.  Not many aching to give him an award.

AGAINST HIM:
Split votes with himself.  DiCaprio could knock him out.  Missed SAG..

AGAINST HIM:
Hasn’t nailed any key notices.  DiCaprio and Bichir.

FOR HIM:
Scored BFCA, Golden Globe, and SAG nominations.  Eastwood directed film.  Baity role as ‘J. Edgar Hoover.”

FOR HIM:
When you thought he was down, he scored a SAG nomination.  Most genuine performance without any limericks, or hat tricks.

FOR HIM:
Scored a Golden Globe nomination.  Had a great year with “Drive” and “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”  His most AMPAS friendly performance for recognition.

FOR HIM:
Scored a much needed BAFTA mention.  Many are still praying it will happen for him finally.

FOR HIM:
If voters are going for Nick Nolte, why not Tom Hardy.  Had another great turn in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.”

AGAINST HIM:
Many (including myself) think it’s not that good of a performance.  The film’s reviews were terrible.

AGAINST HIM:
The buzz for the film is nearly mute.  Do enough put him at #1?

AGAINST HIM:
Split votes with himself.

AGAINST HIM:
Not many key mentions all season.  When BAFTA came out, ballots were in.

AGAINST HIM:
Crowded field.  Would need to knock someone significant out.

  1. My current guesses:

    Geroge Clooney – The Descendants
Leonardo DiCaprio – J. Edgar *WINNER*
    Michael Fassbender – Shame
    Ryan Gosling – Drive
Gary Oldman – Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

  2. I just saw Drive…whoahhhh…absolutely insane…Gosling just solidified himself as coolest guy in Hollywood. Would love to see him get some recognition but doubt Academy will go for it.

  3. Right now is Clooney, Dujardin, and Pitt. I still think DiCaprio is going to walk out as the winner. He is working with Eastwood. Enough said. A lot of people are pushing for Goldman, but his film needs to hit strong when it premiers or it will just be forgotten like it has been over seas. Fassbender and Shannon are getting huge pushes so watch out for them. Forget about Hardy, Banderas, their film received mute reviews and receptions, with “The Warrior” tanking at the box office and “The Skin I Inhabit” receiving mixed criticism from Cannes. Everyone else a big if.

  4. I´m getting used to the Academy rewarding at least one undeserving actor an Oscar every year… well, this year this could really end up being Leo. From the trailer I found “J. Edgar” cold and distant and his performance just out of tone and charicatural… I think he was just miscast and unfortunately Leo´s no Meryl to transform himself into whatever he wants. In my early opinion, it just looks like the challenge was a bit too much for him; His versatility doesn´t go that far afterall.

  5. Leo is definitely still the front runner. Even though I agree with Mikael, his performance based on the trailer, is disappointing and very Howard Hughes-esque. But I still think he will win. It is his time, Eastwood, multiple nominations under his belt. On another note, Oldman should not be that high. His film is dead, and only a strong box office will resuscitate that thing. Dujardin is Leo’s biggest competition right now. Clooney and Pitt have settled into the veteran but yet “too good looking/or too nice” to actually win place. Oldman’s position is definitely up for grabs. All of the Next Five names can easily touch that fifth spot from him, except Bichir. Le’t put it this way, Shannon’s “Taking Shelter” is a really small film, Birchir’s “A Better Life” is but a microscope in this race right now. Bump Christoph Waltz, NYFF seems to have resuscitate that film, plus he broke something during one of his projects so that should give him so sympathy votes. Put Horn supportive. He seems good during the trailer but someone that the veterans can make it supporting very easily ala “True Grit”

  6. As I’ve said in the comments, I think this is almost set.

    1. George Clooney – He’s definitely getting a nomination but will his win 6 years prevent another one? I hope not, the best performance should win, no matter what.
    2. Brad Pitt – Has to be in as well. Unlikely winner though, due to the reasons GL stated.
    3. Jean Dujardin – The film is adored and will probably be a BP nom. Unanimous praise for his performance.
    4. Leonard DiCaprio – I still think there’s a slight chance he misses, but the role is too big for that to happen. Looked weak in the trailer though.
    5. Gary Oldman – More hopeful than realistic maybe? The film-watching public love him, he’s never been nominated and the film has excellent reviews. Could happen.

Next in line- Fassbender (Shame, would be reward for a great year), Gosling, Shannon, Damon, Gordon-Levitt.

  7. I would put Paul Giamatti and Michael Shannon in the top five in place of Pitt and Oldman, not that they don’t deserve it.

  8. I have as my predictions:

Antonio Banderas – The Skin I Live In
    George Clooney – Descendants
Ryan Gosling – Ides of March
Gary Oldman – Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
    Brad Pitt – Moneyball

I still don’t think that DiCaprio will live up to his hype.

  9. I think it’s foolish to put Oldman in second place and discard DiCaprio all together to the next five. People forget very easily that “Invictus” was also a major let down from Eastwood but still scored acting noms for Freeman and Damon. Oscar lover DiCaprio. He is in the club for sure. Oldman’s film is buzzless and he is in very few “wishful” thinking lists. I want to see how long you will keep hyping his place in the race. It took you one update to face the facts with Gosling, maybe it’s time to do the same and start pushing back Mr. Oldman now. The truth right now is that the race is between Clooney and Dujardin. But for one to win a second statue, one has to kill it, and unless the film does major box office damage and precursor love, Clooney is pretty much stuck with a nom. In which Pitt is facing right now. What goes against Dujardin is that he doesn’t conform. As I sat for the Q&A for “The Artist” at NYFF he was the only one with a translator even though he could quick of some words in English. As he put it best, “[He] is very French”. What won Cotillard and Benigni their respective statues was their conformity to the race. But trust me, that smile can swoon even the harshest of the Academy members so we’ll have to see how precursors play for him. When it comes to DiCaprio he is going to make it. The question is, is he a major player or just a space filler? I have said it before and the fact is there is only one true spot available and Fassbender is the likest contender to get it behind Shannon, of course Oldman, or even Gosling. Levitt’s chances are dim. His film failed to impact the box office or film conversation for that matter. Same goes for Giamatti and Hardy.Waltz and his costars may go supporting according to the buzz where they will have a better chance of breaking in. Everyone else is still pretty much in the game, lol, now put back DiCaprio in the top 5 lol.

  10. right now I still have Leo winning it. He just looks fantastic in J. Edgar, and until I am convinced otherwise, he still the front runner in my opinion

    1. Leonardo DiCaprio-J. Edgar
    2. George Clooney-The Descendents-reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and if the movie hits big enough, he could win
    3. Jean Dujardin-The Artist-seems to be one of the frontrunners right now, word was great coming out of cannes
    4. Michael Shannon-Take Shelter-a performance that I hope to god is not overlooked, looks like it could sneak up on some people. Haven’t heard a bad review yet
    5. Gary Oldman-Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy-long overdue actor, another one who I hope is not overlooked on Oscar morning. Could end up falling out if movie fizzles

    Next in Line:
Brad Pitt-Moneyball-he is graet in Moneyball, but in my opinion just doesn’t measure up to the five performances above
Michael Fassbender-Shame-terriffic young up and comer, but just too much competition this year in the category for him to get a nom. He’ll have his year, he has time
Ryan Gosling-Drive-perhaps the best working actor under the age of 35 today, already has Oscar recognition, and missed big time last year for Blue Valentine, however film seems to have died off a bit
Woody Harrelson-Rampart-scored Oscar love last time he teamed up with writer-director Oren Moverman, a very underrated veteran in the business, but doesn’t look like it has the type of traction to last all the way until January
Christoph Waltz-Carnage-still has some good will left over for his Oscar win in 2009, but overall it’s not as “big” or “juicy” of a role as the others listed.

  11. My picks: Ryan Gosling for Drive, Brad Pitt for Moneyball, George Clooney for The Descendants, Michael Shannon for Take Shelter, Leonardo Dicaprio for J. Edgar. Who I want to win: Michael Shannon was a revelation as a man dealing with ominous visions and deep paranoia in this years indie Take Shelter. His challenging role was nothing short of spectacular and in a year with heavy weights as best actor favorites it would be nice to see a true underdog take the golden man home. Who will win: This one really is up in the air, but I’m leaning towards Leonardo Dicaprio for J. Edgar. He was unfathomably robbed for The Aviator and I think he is over due. I believe academy voters will finally wise up to this talented actor and give him what he deserved so long ago. And I can’t believe the editor thinks that Gosling has a better chance of capturing a nomination for The Ides of March than Drive. Give me a fu***** break dude.

  12. Leo DiCaprio is definitely getting nominated. I think Pitt is more deserving of the nom for Supporting Actor for Tree of Life. I don’t see him beating Clooney or DiCaprio with Moneyball.

  13. Well at least you are pushing Oldman to the back which is about time. He is not going to make it. I still don’t think he will make it. Fassbender is taking that spot. And I still think DiCaprio will win this one. A lot of the reviews were more against the writing. Plus it’s going to be one of those cases where everyone is just going with “just hand him the damn thing already”. But I do admit, if he doesn’t score Globes or SAGS it’s going to be hard.

  14. You obviously don’t see the greatness of Drive.

    share

  15. @OMFGITSROHIT: It has nothing to do with us seeing the “greatness” in Drive… These are Clay’s predictions of what th Academy will decide upon. And as of now with the lead actor category so filled up, Gosling’s performance most likely won’t make it.

  16. 1. George Clooney – Seems strong for the win right now
    2. Jean Dujardin – Very possible winner
    3. Brad Pitt – Probably BP nominee, loved by all, “retiring” etc
    4. Michael Fassbender – Will likely get a swagger of critics awards and his big year has him in the spotlight
    5. Gary Oldman – Starting to get that feeling now

    6. Leonardo DiCaprio – Not sure he can make it with the reviews
    7. Woody Harrelson – Wildcard
    8. Michael Shannon – Not enough support I don’t think

    share

  17. If Gosling gets nominated, it should be for Drive (and, honestly, I think it probably would be). Gosling winning would make me happy, just because that’s the sort of thing I like to see, but I don’t see that happening.
I still can’t get a good grip on this category. Clooney and Dujardin are nominated for sure, and if I had to pick a setup right now, I’d agree with what’s at the top up there. I have a good feeling that Oldman will get some recognition this year (to make up for snubs) and Pitt and DiCaprio both have things going for them (soon to retire and huge supporter base, respectively). DiCaprio is probably the most likely to get dropped, since J. Edgar is apparently an embarrassment, and Fassbender will take the place of any fallen, and then Gosling will follow. I don’t see Shannon or Harrelson having good shots this year. I would love it to see Giamatti or Gordon-Levitt nominated, because I loved those movies, but I know that won’t happen.

    share

  18. Can’t see Gosling making it in for either now. He’ll get a Globe nom, probably for Ides of March but Drive wouldn’t surprise me. Hell, he might even get another one for Crazy, Stupid, Love. He’ll have to wait for his next Oscar nom though.

    share

  19. Why is gosling being chosen for march rather than drive. Thats irresponsible. If hes going to get nominated it should be and will be for drive. And I believe he will. Its also going to be pitt, clooney, dicaprio and oldman.

  20. This category along with Best Actress is so crowded. But let’s face it: This is a battle between Jean Dujardin (Beloved Film/BP Frontrunner), George Clooney (Beloved In General), and Brad Pitt (Fake Retiring). Which Leaves 2 spots with many viable contenders like Michael Fassbender, Gary Oldman, Ryan Gosling, Johnathan Gordon Levitt, Michael Shannon, among others.
    1. George Clooney (Presumed Frontrunner/Nom Lock)
    2. Jean Dujardin (In a Loved BP Frontrunner/Predicting Him For The WIN!!!)
    3. Brad Pitt (Well’s he is Fake Retiring…../Strong Industry Support)
    4. Gary Oldman (About time he gets a nomination)
    5. Michael Fassbender (He better get nominated!!!/One of the best male performance in recent years)
    6. Michael Shannon (Very Possible/He could pull it off again ala Revolutionary Road a few years ago)
    7. Ryan Gosling (Great year that likely ends up with ZERO nominations—>campaign for Drive not Ides Please???)
    8. Johnathan Gordon Levitt (Hopefully he will get Oscar glory one day)
    9. Woody Harrelson (a Tour-De-Force Performance in a REALLY small film)
    10. Leonardo DiCaprio (Was consenus frontrunner early…How the mighty have fallen)
    11. Demian Bichir (PLS can we have a surprise like this like we did back in 2003 ala Keisha Castle Hughes???)

  21. This is possibly the list of Oscar nominees this year. At this point I think it’s rather obvious DiCaprio is getting that nomination. Fassbender has the 5 spot tied to his belt unless BAFTA goes crazy for Oldman. I think all the accolades and mentions possible for Shannon and Birchir were given. There isn’t much they can do unless they campaigh really hard or get the Acting branch behind them like Barden last year. I think the battle is really between those top 3 actors. But my bet is with Dujardin. I think it’s obvious people are falling in love with that film and the Academy will be no different. Dujardin is a big part of the picture just like Cotilliard was for “La Vien Rose”.

  22. 1. Brad Pitt
    2. George Clooney
    3. Jean Dujardin
    4. Leonardo DiCaprio
    5. Michael Fassbender

I’m fairly sure that’s the lineup right there, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Oldman or even Gosling knocking Fassbender out.

    share

  23. The likely possibility of DiCaprio getting a nomination for his mediocre chewing the scenery up performance of J. Edgar over Fassbender, Bichir, Shannon, Gosling would be such an oversight and disappointment. In my opinion it should be: Dujardin, Pitt, Clooney locks with Fassbender, Bichir, Shannon, Gosling, & Oldman fighting for the last 2 spots. In my personal opinion, DiCaprio has no business being in this race for his cheesy wooden performance. Saddens me that he’ll likely take an undeserved spot over a superior performance.

  24. I can’t say I’m as annoyed as you right now, having not seen the film, but pretty much everything I’ve read has said he’s very good in the film. Shame’s reviews are just as polarising as well. Plus, we know it’s not all about the performances, as much as we all wish it was.
