SUPPORTING ACTOR

COMMENTARY:

Christopher Plummer has been wreaking havoc from one award show to the next.  Enter: Max Von Sydow.  Two big veterans taking on the Oscars together.  Von Sydow’s film was surprisingly nominated for Best Picture.  Plummer is the only representation from “Beginners.”  That’s a plus for Von Sydow.  Plummer has won the Golden Globe, SAG, and over a dozen critics awards.  Von Sydow has been nearly shut out all season and is playing catch up now.  Plus for Plummer.  Branagh and Nolte are lack for a better word veterans going for the Oscar but in film’s that aren’t unanimously loved.  Branagh’s film seems to be all about Williams anyway and Nolte is lucky to have made the cut.  Jonah Hill is brand new to this type of thing and voters still remember him as the cursing kid from “Superbad.”  There’s no one aching for him to win.  And it needs to be said once again…Poor Albert Brooks.

POSITION

AND THE NOMINATED SUPPORTERS ARE…

1 Christopher Plummer for “Beginners”
2 Max Von Sydow for “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”
3 Kenneth Branagh for “My Week with Marilyn”
4 Nick Nolte for “Warrior”
5 Jonah Hill for “Moneyball”

FOR HIM:
It’s been his to lose for months.  Won Critics Choice and SAG.  Veteran status.  Very likable, heartbreaking character.

FOR HIM:
In this category, he’s won the most critics awards.  Veteran status.  Never been rewarded.  This category loves the bad guys.

FOR HIM:
Oscar bait role (Sir Laurence Olivier).  Never rewarded.  If they’re going for Williams, they’ll likely go for him.

FOR HIM:
Landed the SAG award which helped a lot.  Been nominated before and some may have missed him.  Some say it’s his best work.

FOR HIM:
His best role to date and it’s a dramatic one.  The chemistry between him and Pitt is sensational.  If they love Pitt, you can’t leave Jonah out.

AGAINST HIM:
Albert Brooks and Kenneth Branagh could still surprise.  He is a first half of the year contender.

AGAINST HIM:
Missed the SAG nomination.  Could he be a surprise snub?

AGAINST HIM:
Doesn’t have the complexity or heart that the other contenders do with the role.  Reviews for the film are just ‘ok.’

AGAINST HIM::
Outside of him, the film isn’t a major player.  Many actors fighting for a spot.

AGAINST HIM:
There may be some who don’t take him seriously as of yet.

FOR HIM:
Playing Sigmund Freud, a baity role.  Golden Globe nomination came in the nick of time.  Some may have been reminded how good he was.

FOR HIM:
The best part of a bad film.  He’s the Jake Gyllenhaal of “J. Edgar.”  Still has love left over from “The Social Network.” SAG helps a lot.

FOR HIM:
Terrence Malick.  Won critics awards for this work.  As a volatile Mr. O’Brien, he shines.  A double nominee?

FOR HIM:
If there is a performance to reward in a comedy this year, he is it.  The heart and soul of a dark comedy.  BFCA mention.

FOR HIM:
“Midnight in Paris” has showed up everywhere.  If they’re going to go for a performance from the film, he’s the easiest to recognize.

AGAINST HIM:
His film’s buzz is dead.  Probably needed the SAG nod to be taken seriously.

AGAINST HIM:
The film’s reviews hold him back a lot.  Other bigger and better performances in better films going for a spot.

AGAINST HIM:
Voters are going to commit to either Mr. O’Brien or Billy Beane.  It looks to be the latter.

AGAINST HIM:
No SAG or Globe.  Seems to be sitting it out.

AGAINST HIM:
Only scored an Indie Spirit nod that’s worth mentioning.  Not a whole lot of screen time.

  1. My current guesses:

    Albert Brooks – Drive
John Hawkes – Martha Marcy May Marlene
Erza Miller – We Need to Talk About Kevin
Brad Pitt – The Tree of Life
    Christopher Plummer – Beginners *WINNER*

  2. This category is shaping up very oddly. It’s still very quiet, except for Plummer, who I still think is one of the few that can be called a front runner right now. Brooks is getting the same push Pete Postlethwaite got last year which didn’t pay off and based on the box office I don’t think it will for him either. This race is still wide open for anyone.

  3. The race is still wide open here. Plummer still the talk. Everyone else needs to work it or get out.

  4. The Plummer talk is quieting but he’s got to still be in front. Very open category, same as Supp. Actress.

    1. Christopher Plummer – Veteran, broken through for a nom, solid role
    2. Armie Hammer – If the film doesn’t fail I think he’ll be in. He’s a nice new name and has Eastwood’s backing.
    3. Albert Brooks – A lot of people love the film and he could get the rewards for that.
    4. Kenneth Branagh – Good role and a respected actor. Depends on reviews though.
    5. Max Von Sydow – Hard to say right now but the role is supposed to be great and IMO he missed big time for The Diving Bell…

Next in line – Pitt (hopeful), Hawkes, Hoffman, Mortensen, Nolte, Oswalt, Waltz, The War Horse guys

  7. I’m predicting:

    Branagh
    Brooks
    Giamatti
    Hill
    Hoffman

Honestly, I think Plummer will have already been forgotten about.

  8. Now that I have seen Hugo and My Week With Marilyn at the NYFF, I would like to say two things. Plummer has got strong competition not from Brooks, but from Branagh. I think the latter will win. He has everything Oscar winners are made of, amazing acting and superb monologues everywhere. I am also seeing Kinglsey getting into the supporting field for Hugo, he shared Branagh’s character’s qualities as well.

  9. My picks: Albert Brooks for Drive, Christopher Plummer for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Jonah Hill for Moneyball, John Hawkes for Martha Marcy May Marlene, Kenneth Branagh. Who I want to win: Albert Brooks for Drive. Never, absolutely never, have I seen Albert Brooks play a villain this delicious or a simply a villain at all. Yet, he was able to personify evil so precisely he put actors such as Alan Rickman and Gary Oldman who have established entire careers playing villains to shame. That’s how good he was. Who will win: Albert Brooks for Drive. Out of all the acting categories this is the clearest choice. It’s a no brainer. He will win. Enough said.

  10. Armie Hammer will get nominated.

  11. I agree with the last comment — I think Armie is in. And if not — WHAT!? — as Matt Damon was shown some love for Eastwood’s lesser Invictus. His snub in The Social Network last year should benefit him here … altough snubs have never worked for others like Maria Bello etc. Some times the Academy just doesn’t care for someone …

  12. Another solid top 5. I still think Branagh is the front runner in the baity role he plays. Brooks is going to end up just like Renner last year with a solo nomination for the film. At this point I am not so sure Hammer is getting in, he will need the some precursors ditto for Sydow.

  13. Real weak category which makes it quite fun to pick:

    1. Christopher Plummer – Let’s see if he can hold on all the way til February
    2. Max von Sydow – If it’s more than a cameo I think he’s in
    3. Albert Brooks – I can easily see him falling away but right now he’s in
    4. Patton Oswalt – Seems like a suitable comedian nominee
    5. Kenneth Branagh – If MWWM keeps gaining steam he’ll make it

    6. Christoph Waltz – They like nominating people again after a previous come-from-no-where type of nomination
    7. Viggo Mortensen – Getting some decent reviews now and who doesn’t like Viggo?
    8. Sir Ben Kingsley – Not sure of the extent of the role?
    9. Corey Stoll – Probably not enough screen time
    10. Brad Pitt – Hopeful pick I guess

  14. No hope for Alan Rickman? He was getting all kinds of love at the end of the summer. I think he may have a shot.
For-sures at this point are Plummer, Brooks, and Branagh. Beyond that it’s unsure. Von Sydlow will make it if his role warrants it, Waltz has something of a chance, I’ve heard good things about Cumberbatch, Pitt will probably be nominated if Moneyball doesn’t go through, and Armie Hammer has a shot, apparently, though i doubt he’ll make it unless Leo does. Still putting Rickman in as a fringe element.

  15. Brooks will win. He will and he better. More deserving then any other hopefuls. Besides hes a vet and albeit hes never played a villain, he was electrifying in Drive. A personification of evil.

    share

  16. The rest of the noms will go to John Hawks, Kenneth Branagh, Christopher Plummer, and Pitt

  17. Saw “Marilyn” yesterday. Branagh gives the best performance in the film. He may be the one to beat not Plummer.

    share

  18. Saw the Beginners on dvd. I can’t believe Plummer is getting the amount of attention is getting for this. He’s good and I could see a nomination but having him as the favorite? That has to be based on sentimentality because the film is meh. I can’t see him winning for this. He’s not deserving over Branagh.

  19. In a category often rewarding veterans, guess who are the contenders?? DING—>Veterans. This is clearly a race between Albert Brooks and Christopher Plummer (frontrunner). Following closely behind should be Max von Sydow granted that ELIC delivers. However don’t count out Kenneth Brannagh for his thunderous performance in “My Week With Marilyn”. In my opinion the last spot is up for grabs with Oswalt, Hill, Hoffman, Miller still in contention among few others. Although i find this category this year extremely weak this year:
    1. Christopher Plummer (Frontrunner/OVERDUE!!!!)
    2. Albert Brooks (OVERDUE/Critic’s Darling of the season)
    3. Max Von Sydow (UNKNOWN Factor but He’s seems to be a safe bet at this point)
    4. Kenneth Branagh (If AMPAS goes apeshit for Michelle Williams(they usually do), he can come along for the ride)
    5. Patton Oswalt (Darkhorse/Hopes it happens)
    6. Andy Serkis (Gollum, King Kong, now Caesar, he is so overdue but AMPAS isn’t COOL enough sadly, still i will dream)
    7. Ezra Miller (If Tilda gets in, maybe…….)
    8. Jonah Hill (Buzz is fading…..)
    9. Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Reviews were good not great like the film itself)
    10. Viggo Mortensen (Everyone loves Viggo but not everyone loves the film)
    11. Nick Nolte (Weak Box Office hurts his chances)
    12. Armie Hammer (Only redeeming factor in a real crappy film/Plays the Supportive Lover/Snubbed Last Year)

  20. I didn’t put Pitt in the list cuz i believe they will honor him this year in the Best Actor race

  21. For gods shake , Alan Rickman gave a solid perfomance in Deahtly hallows p2 . He should be at least nominated!!!

    share

  22. YES ^ Rickman love!! He totally desrves a nomination for Harry Potter.

    share

  23. Unfortunately Rickman won’t happen in my opinion. Even BFCA snubbed HP. Rickman will have 0% chance if sag snubs HP as well.

  24. 1. Christopher Plummer
    2. Albert Brooks
    3. Kenneth Branagh
    4. Max von Sydow
    5. Nick Nolte

Man that’s an old bunch! Can easily see Hammer, Hill or Oswalt taking 1 of the last 2 spots. First three are locked.

  25. We know almost for sure that Plummer, Brooks, and Branagh are getting nominated. The last two could be almost anyone. In play are Nolte, von Sydow, Hammer, Oswalt, and Hill (a full category unto themselves!)

  26. Can we hope AMPAS is cool enough to put Serkis in? Yeah i know it won’t happen til hell freezes over. Also despite being good in the role, Hammer has no business being in TOP5 considering his competition has meatier and better written roles and performances in comparision. Let’s hope it is about the performances and not the politics for once

  27. I think Jonah HIll has a good chance to be in the top 5.

  28. Okay…can someone please explain to me a logical reason for why Brad Pitt won’t be nominated for “The Tree of Life.” His performance in that movie blew my mind…I was legitimately scared of the guy. It was one of the most powerful performances I have seen all year and continues to stick in my mind. I felt Jessica’s great performance was very dependable on him. As much as I love Jonah Hill, I can’t rationalize how his performance is more oscar worthy than Brad in “Tree.” And don’t get me wrong, I loved Moneyball, and Jonah was solid as always, but just didn’t think it was completely Oscar worthy.

But I guess it is what it is! I do think it’s cool to hopefully see a guy from the Apatow gang score an oscar nod! There’s always a few head scratchers for me but I guess that’s all part of it!

    share

  29. Christopher Plummer all the way. He has not been beaten by anyone else.

    share

  30. Give Captain VonTrapp….i mean Christopher Plummer his Oscar already!!! No one has a shot unless AMPAS goes gaga for ELIC & VonSydow which is unlikely. Once again RIP Albert Brooks :( !!!
