Ladies and gentlemen, we come now to part 3 of the Sizing up series. This one is as close to an all-encompassing grouping of the hopefuls for Best Actor as possible (excluding some no shot contenders). I’m looking to categorize them by their assumed likelihood of a nomination come the big morning, but clearly there’s plenty of guesswork at play here as well. For my money, this is the most competitive category outside of Best Picture and possibly Best Director. There’s a bunch of top-tier contenders that all could win, let alone get nominated, so this is a bit of a top-heavy category.

Episode 38:01 (***½)
The 38th season of “Saturday Night LIVE” debuted last Saturday with host Seth MacFarlane, who’s had a great year with his film “Ted” and of course, still holds the success of FOX’s “Family Guy.”
In show structure, this was the first episode since Emmy Award nominee Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, and Abby Elliott were announced to leave the show at the end of last season. Leaving fans of the show skeptical, critics and audiences were unsure if the show would be able to sustain without the multi-layered talents of Wiig and Samberg who have been staples in the show for years. Proud to report, when talent leaves, new talent steps up. Read more on ‘SNL’ Cast and Host Seth MacFarlane Deliver Best Work in Years!…

That was as classy as I could keep the title for this post about the deliciously raunchy red band trailer for The To Do List. Intermixed with commentary from Aubrey Plaza, the trailer shows Plaza as Brandy Klark, a type-A high school grad who makes a to-do list of all the sexual activities she never did in high school and wants todo before heading off to college. The movie written and directed by Maggie Carey, stars Plaza and Donald Glover, along with Alia Shawkat, Rachel Bilson, Andy Samberg, Scott Porter, Connie Britton, Clark Gregg, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Johnny Simmons, Sarah Steele and Bill Hader.
The To Do List comes out on Valentine’s Day 2013. Check out the trailer after the jump!

Celeste and Jesse Forever is a melancholy, but delightful romantic comedy with a sharp script by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones and two great lead performances. The film stars Jones and Andy Samberg as Celeste and Jesse, a couple in the midst of a divorce, but who still spend all of their time together. This, naturally, annoys their friends and when they encourage Jesse to start dating again, Celeste doesn’t take it well. Throw in Celeste’s dealings with a tween pop star who her company is representing, and the character takes off on a journey of self sabotage that ultimately leads to self discovery and a bittersweet resolution.

One of the better received films at the Sundance Film Festival this year was the romantic dramedy ‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’. I really liked the last film from director Lee Toland Krieger (‘The Vicious Kind’), and I’m always interested in movies written by actors (in this case, Rashida Jones, who stars with Andy Samberg). This one is supposed to be a good one, and after the jump you can take a look at the Poster and Trailer for the flick. It has potential by the looks of it, and stay tuned for some reviews here at The Awards Circuit!

Two days left of the Los Angeles Film Festival™, and already I’m feeling somewhat sad. It’s been an incredible ride I don’t quite want to see end, but all good things must come to an end, and this particular venue is certainly a very good thing. Yesterday, Terence Johnson and I were both able to screen the new Rashida Jones’ penned comedy, Celeste and Jesse Forever. Because Terence didn’t have a press pass or ticket, he had to stand in the rush line before the ushers would allow anyone into the theater. Terence had zero confidence of making it into the screening, but I kept texting him that he most assuredly would, and he did indeed! I guess Terence forgot to read all my clairvoyant American Idol predictions this past spring. Oh well, it’s never too late to learn that I’m just your average psychic! Below are some of our thoughts concerning the screenings and events we partook in on the eighth day at LAFF.
