Awards Circuit Power Hour is back this week with a great in-depth talk about some of the highlights of the past week.
We kick off the podcast talking about the new trailer for Romeo and Juliet. Is it a story that needs to be told…again? Also, Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfield has a terrific year ahead of her including a role in Tommy Lee Jones’ next directorial effort. Is there wiggle room for her to make a second showing with Oscar so soon?
Tackling the epic story of Cleopatra always seemed like an odd fit for filmmaker David Fincher. I have no doubt that a Fincher directed ‘Cleopatra’ would have had the potential to be something special, but it never felt like the type of movie he’s ideally suited for. While, Vulture is reporting here that we won’t actually be getting his take, as he’s dropped out of making the flick, still set to star Angelina Jolie in the title role. Apparently Ang Lee is now the top choice to direct, but nothing is set in stone. You can see some details after the jump, but I wonder if this is a sign that he’s more likely or perhaps less likely to take on ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’, since both are set up at Sony. We shall see, but you can find out a little bit more about Fincher’s departure from the project below…
Sure to be one of 2014′s highly anticipated titles is Maleficent, the retelling of the Sleeping Beauty tale from the view point of the evil sorceress. Disney has been developing this title for a while and when Angelina Jolie’s schedule freed up, they were able to get the production moving forward. Today as production commenced, Disney has released a first look at Jolie in costume which you can see, along with the full press release and plot synopsis, after the jump.
On Monday, June 4th, Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie celebrated her 37th birthday. Born in Los Angeles, California in 1975 to actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, she is the younger of two children. At age 11, she enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute where she attended classes for two years before changing her mind on acting in favor of becoming a funeral director. She spent the rest of her adolescent years rebelling like most teenagers with long periods of depression before returning to her theater studies after graduating high school.
Well, Sharlto Copley is having himself quite a week, isn’t he? After signing on to Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake and the movie Open Grave, Deadline has learned that Copley is in negotiations to join Maleficent as King Stefan, the father of Princess Aurora. Angelina Jolie is already signed on to play evil sorceress Maleficent. This movie will attempt to tell the story of Sleeping Beauty from the point of the villainess.
