americanbeauty_kevinspaceyIf you listened to the Awards Circuit Power Hour two weeks ago, then you heard the winners read for the Awards Circuit Community Awards – Year 1999.  For those who didn’t have the chance to listen to the winners, the full list is down below.  As  you can see, the readership of the Awards Circuit still agrees that Sam Mendes’ American Beauty was the best film of the year seen by the wins in Best Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay.

Kevin Spacey reclaimed his title, winning Best Actor in a Leading Role over Russell Crowe.  While in the real world, Annette Bening has never received recognition from AMPAS, she was chosen over Oscar-winner Hilary Swank.  In the Supporting categories Tom Cruise was awarded for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia while Angelina Jolie reclaimed her prize for Girl, Interrupted.  PT Anderson’s film also won Best Cast Ensemble.  In Adapted Screenplay, Jim Uhls triumphed for penning David Fincher’s Fight Club, the only award the film received surprisingly, given it was the most nominated film with twelve.

The full winners are listed below.  The longlist will be released in the next few days for Year 1998 where Shakespeare in Love triumphed over Saving Private Ryan.  Will it happen or again or will another film like The Truman Show or Pleasantville swoop in?  Look out for it. April 26, 2013

sixthsense_haleyjoelosmentAll of you have chimed in with the Year 1999 with the Awards Circuit Community Awards.  Nominations were announced last Sunday and the final ballots are now open for you to vote.  David Fincher’s cult-classic Fight Club leads the nominations with twelve with Sam Mendes’ American Beauty closely behind it with eleven.  The beautiful and talented Julianne Moore is double-nominated for her performances in Neil Jordan’s The End of the Affair and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia.  She is the second person in ACCA history to be double nominated in two separate years.  The first was Kate Winslet.

Other record setting includes Buena Vista Social Club that becomes the first film to be nominated for Documentary and Foreign Language Film.  Thomas Newman is the second composer to be double-nominated in the same category.  Michael Clarke Duncan is the second actor to be nominated by the community posthumously for The Green Mile.  Heath Ledger is the first in his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight and it was also in Supporting.

This weekend, look for the Davis Award (Editor’s) choices for the Year 1999 as well as the collective awards of the Awards Circuit staff called, “The Circuit Awards.”

David Fincher’s ‘Fight Club’ Leads ACCA Nominations with 12, ‘American Beauty’ Scores 11

The community has made their choices for 1999...what will you choose for the winner?

    April 24, 2013

americanbeautyBy now, hopefully many of you listened to the Awards Circuit Power Hour from this week to hear your nominees for the Awards Circuit Community Awards for 1999.  Looking at the film year, it was a great opportunity to make some eclectic choices in various categories which many were taken.  David Fincher’s cult-classic Fight Club led the nominations with twelve including Best Picture, Director, and two Best Actor nominations for Edward Norton and Brad Pitt.  Sam Mendes’ Oscar-winner American Beauty followed closely behind with eleven nominations including a citation for Chris Cooper in Best Supporting Actor.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia scored nine nominations including Supporting mentions for Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore.  Moore was double-nominated by the community for the second time.  The other mention is in Lead Actress for Neil Jordan’s The End of the Affair, the sole nomination for the film.  A film that surprisingly only scored one nomination was Michael Mann’s The Insider.  The powerhouse film that was nominated for seven Oscars only managed Russell Crowe for citation in Lead Actor.  Stanley Kubrick’s final film Eyes Wide Shut received one nomination as well for Nicole Kidman.

Jim Carrey received his second ACCA nomination for Lead Actor for Milos Forman’s Man on the Moon.  He’ll compete against Oscar’s Best Actor winner Kevin Spacey.  Hilary Swank from Boys Don’t Cry and Annette Bening from American Beauty will square off again for the coveted title of Best Actress but they are now joined by Nicole Kidman for Eyes Wide Shut, Julianne Moore, and Reese Witherspoon for Election.

Supporting Actor had a tie for six nominees that include Cooper, Cruise, the late Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile, Jude Law for The Talented Mr. Ripley, John Malkovich for Being John Malkovich, and Haley Joel Osment for The Sixth Sense.  Supporting Actress will have Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie square off against Helena Bonham Carter for Fight Club, Cameron Diaz and Catherine Keener for Being John Malkovich, and Julianne Moore.

The blockbuster hit The Matrix scored one major nomination in Original Screenplay after many speculating the potential for the film to show up in Best Picture and Directing.  The Wachowski’s classic film managed seven nominations in total.  Toy Story 2 landed an Adapted Screenplay nomination along with Alexander Payne’s Election and Frank Darabont’s The Green Mile.

Voting will open up later today.  You will only be able to vote one time per category so make sure it counts.  Who are you rooting for? Read more on David Fincher’s ‘Fight Club’ Leads ACCA Nominations with 12, ‘American Beauty’ Scores 11…

fightclub_imageIt’s time folks!  For our newer readers who haven’t been through it yet, it’s time to go back in time with the Awards Circuit Community Awards for Year 1999.  This gives you all the opportunity to go back in time and correct (or agree) with Oscar’s choices.  We started this in 2009 and have gone back every year since during our awards off-season.  I have been dying to get into the 1990s to see what our Awards Circuit community would do with some of the best years in cinema.

Just in case you don’t know or remember how great the Year 99′ was here’s some key moments from the year and presumed snubs and omissions along the way: Read more on ACCA 1999 Opens for All to See!…

Awards Circuit Community Goes for ‘Les Miserables’

Daniel Day-Lewis also made history becoming the first three-time Best Actor winner...

    February 18, 2013

les-miserables-movie-image-24It’s often the favorite part of being a member of the Awards Circuit, the community which consists of just under 100,000 voted in the 2012 Awards Circuit Community Awards (ACCA).  If you listened to our podcast, we revealed the winners which were semi-surprising to say the least.

Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables won five awards including Best Motion Picture.  What’s ironic is the film becomes the first film in ACCA history to win Best Picture without being nominated for Best Director in the same year that Ben Affleck’s Argo seems assured to win Best Picture without Director.  The ACCA voters didn’t miss out on the opportunity to reward Affleck however, as he won Best Director along with his film winning Best Film Editing for William Goldenberg. ACCA imageIt’s that time of the year! The Awards Circuit Community Awards have officially opened up for voting for 2012. A staple of the Awards Circuit, we are the only awards site that gives its community a voice. Hopefully most of our readers have seen the majority of contenders but this is also the place to push films and performances that were ignored during the season. As always, there are rules that I must make known to our readership before you vote:

    1. Readers can only vote in one category, one time, per IP address.
    2. You are allowed to vote for up to five contenders in all categories with the exception of Best Motion Picture, which you can vote for ten.
    3. Motion Picture follows the same guidelines as the Academy. All films that receive more than 5% of the votes will be declared a nominee. In the event more than 10 films receive 5% (which is nearly impossible), the ten highest vote receivers will make the final lineup.
    4. The Awards Circuit Community does not follow studio category placements. If you believe a performance to be a lead, but the studio placed them in supporting, you may vote them in lead. There are several instances where contenders are listed in both Lead and Supporting (example: Christoph Waltz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, etc.). You can vote for them in either category but if a contender makes the top five in both categories for the same performance, it will cancel each other out. An actor and actress can be double nominated in the same category but for different films.
    5. If a performance or film is NOT listed in a category, you are allowed to do a write-in at the bottom of the category. If you write a film or performance in that IS listed, then the vote DOES NOT count.
    6. Voting will be open until Friday, February 1, 2013. Nominees will be announced on February 3, 2013 on the Awards Circuit Power Hour!

ACCA: Best of the Decade is officially open!

What are your choices for the BEST of 2000 to 2009?

    September 3, 2012

After weeks of technical difficulties and just being insanely busy, the last Awards Circuit Community Award Voting process for the year is in full effect. Better than that, it’s the first ACCA: Best of the Decade.

What happens is ALL the winners, chosen by our readership, are listed together in their respective categories (keep in mind, we’ve had ties over the years.) from Years 2000 to 2009. Unfortunately, some of the technical categories like Sound, Makeup, even the Documentary categories are unable to be listed because we didn’t deliver them consistently over the years.

But that’s not all. During this week, the ACCA pages will be getting a facelift along with the Top Ten pages for our Staff and the Davis Awards (Editor’s Choices). Voting is open now and I CANNOT wait to see what our readership calls the VERY BEST of the decade. I have my suspicions on what will be chosen but I have no idea.

Use this space for your “For Your Consideration” pleas as well as anything else you want to yell about.  There’s also the ACCA button on the sidebar.

    Happy Voting!

In case you missed or didn’t make through our podcast on Sunday, we announced the winners of the Awards Circuit Community Awards for Year 2000.  All I can say is, when the readers have favorites, you guys and gals make it known.  Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream was the big winner with five ACCAs including Motion Picture, Director (Darren Aronofsky), and Lead Actress (Ellen Burstyn).  The film was also runner-up in the six other categories it was nominated in.  Christian Bale won Best Actor for his portrayal in American Psycho while Benicio del Toro mirrored his Oscar win in Supporting Actor in Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, which also won Adapted Screenplay and Cast Ensemble.  Kate Hudson beat out her co-star in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous and took the Supporting Actress prize along with Crowe’s screenplay being rewarded in the Original category.  Heavy favorite Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, directed by Ang Lee, won some technicals including a runner-up spot in Best Picture.  Oscar’s Best Picture Winner Gladiator won a couple of technical awards as well.

Starting Monday, July 30th, we will open up voting for ACCA: Best of the Decades.  All the winnners, chosen by the Awardscircuit.com readership will face-off in all the categories with one film and many performances being named the “Best of the Decade.”  Gear up.

    Davis Awards 2000 Announced!

What are your favorites from Year 2000?

    July 19, 2012

Taking a break from all this Bat-talk.  Trekking through the year 2000 was a daunting task.  There were many films I hadn’t seen in years, while others I’ve never feasted my eyes on before.  Naturally this brings on a dilemma.  A 15-year-old Clayton watching movies is very different from a now, 28-year-old Clayton.  I like to think there is a maturity there that lacked before.  I realized that after re-watching Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.  In 2000, I found the film immensely overrated and couldn’t understand what people were so mesmerized by.  Naturally, I’ve never officially appreciated it or thought it to be among Ang Lee’s best.  Enter last weekend.  Talk about being fantastic a second-time around, the film was nearly hypnotic in its style and approach.  Do I consider it the best of the year?  Not really.  One of the best?  Definitely so.

With our ACCA 2000 closing up on Friday, and winners being announced on Sunday’s podcast, I have to let you in on my favorites of the new millennium.  Please include yours in the comment section and let’s see what commonalities or differences we have.  Bold denotes winner.  Enjoy after the jump: Read more on Davis Awards 2000 Announced!…

Crouching Tiger vs. Gladiator vs. Requiem - Which will win the big award?

    July 12, 2012

In case any of you missed it, our great Awards Circuit community chose their favorites for the year 2000.  In case you’re new to our site, ACCA (or Awards Circuit Community Awards) gives all the readers an opportunity to vote for their favorite films and performances of the year.  As we move forward during our present time, we have been going back in time to vote on years in the past.

What makes this round of voting exciting is Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which leads nomination tally with fourteen, the most nominated film in ACCA history, could become the first foreign language film to take the award.  The film will have tough competition behind Ridley Scott’s Gladiator and Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream, which have thirteen and eleven nominations respectively.  Is there a deep love for Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous or Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic that can rule the day?  You decide.

You can click on the “ACCA Voting” button on the sidebar or you can click here to go directly to the page.  Voting will stay open until Friday, July 20 (the day a certain Caped Crusader film opens).  Winners will be announced on the following Sunday’s podcast. Here we are readers, the last year of the new millennium for our readers to highlight their favorite film achievements of the year.  It’s always interesting to see how the community uses this power to rewrite – or not – the Academy results of the past.  The year 2000 reveals some significant overlap between Oscar and ACCA darlings but also some serious love towards films ignored at that time.

The big time favorite that emerged from this round of voting is almost without question Ang Lee’s wuxia epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.  With a whopping fourteen nods it is the most nominated film in ACCA history!  Best Picture winner Gladiator trailed just behind with thirteen nominations while Darren Aronofsky’s bleak addiction drama Requiem for a Dream managed the third-highest tally with eleven nominations.  Cameron Crowe’s nostalgic rock odyssey Almost Famous and Steven Soderbergh’s polemic and multi-layered drama Traffic rounded out the most popular ACCA nominees.   The Best Lead Actress longlist was apparently such a dearth of great work that our community chose not to choose and ended up with a tie of six nominees, and there was even a surprise write-in nominee in a category.  Full list of ACCA nominees after the jump:

The Awards Circuit Community chose their favorites in television....

    June 25, 2012

The first ever Television version of the Awards Circuit Community Awards (or ACCA as it’s affectionately known around these parts) has come to a close, and the inaugural slate of winners represents a fascinating look at the TV habits and preferences of the faithful readers of the site.

First and foremost, the big winners were ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Game of Thrones’. The former led the way with 5 wins, including Best Comedy Series, Best Writing for a Comedy Series, and both Supporting categories for a Comedy Series. The latter dominated the drama section, taking 4 prizes, including Best Drama Series, Best Writing for a Drama Series, and Best Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage. Television's best compete for your votes...

    May 22, 2012

One of the best things I’d pride myself about the Awards Circuit is community. We embrace our readers and value all your opinions and outlooks on different topics we discuss day-in-day-out. Per a suggestion from longtime reader John Rivera, we have decided to expand our popular ACCA awards into the television sector of the site.

With all television shows just ending on U.S. programming, you now have the opportunity to make your voice heard in our 2012 ACCA Television Awards. We will NOT be going back during past years because that would just be way too difficult given all the cancelled programming over the years but we will be voting annually in the month of May.

There’s a button on the sidebar or you can vote here.

    General rules as always:

    • You can only vote ONE time per category.
    • You can select up to FIVE nominees per category.
    • You can add any television or performer that isn’t listed but make sure it isn’t listed before you add.

It’s that time!  The Awards Circuit Community Awards must now choose their favorite films and performances from 2002.  In case you missed it, Rob Marshall’s “Chicago” and Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” led the way with twelve nominations each.  Stephen Daldry’s “The Hours” garnered nine nominations while Spike Jonze’s “Adaptation” captured eight citations.  Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York” failed to nab a Best Picture nomination but still managed nine nominations altogether.  Roman Polanski’s “The Pianist,” though still named a Best Picture nominee, could only muster five nominations from the community.

In record setting news, Leonardo DiCaprio remains the most nominated actor in community history.  With his Lead Actor nomination for “Catch Me If You Can,” he has been nominated six times by our readership.  Right behind him is the great Meryl Streep, with her double nominations for “The Hours” and “Adaptation,” has been cited five times.  I leave the milestones up to our longtime reader, GL to go over the stats when winners are announced.  We always look forward to them.
