As we inch closer to our 50th podcast episode, the writers and I talk about quite a bit this week. Of course, after the HUGE week of trailers, our first half of the show is dedicated to all the various movie trailers that dropped including Gravity, August: Osage County, The Butler, and Captain Phillips. Do we think these are possible contenders or did they strike the wrong chord with some of our staff members?
Mark drops some serious knowledge on this week’s “Did You Know?”
We reflect on the opening of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. What did our staff members think of the film and what do we think of its Oscar chances and its lead Leonardo DiCaprio.
It was the week of canceling television shows and we discuss the possible Emmy Contenders in both Drama and Comedy categories. What are your favorite shows on television at the moment? Discuss with us.
Awards Circuit Power Hour is back this week with several topics to juice up your interest. We kick things off by talking about the Tony nominations that were recently announced and Terence admits his falters in predicting the unpredictable Tonys.
With Zach Braff utilizing Kickstarter to fund his next directorial project, the staff and I discuss if it is right for someone with access to celebrities to use a crowd-funding source like Kickstarter.
The Tribeca Film Festival as well as the Montclair Film Festival have ended. We talk about some of our favorite films that played and if any of them have any Oscar chances.
Summer is upon us and a lot of blockbusters and indies are gearing up for their debuts. The staff each pick two choices for their most anticipated films. Also, Mark Johnson goes over the summer schedule.
We play “The Producer Game” and adapting or remaking a science fiction/horror film. Which film would you remake if you could?
Finally, the ballots are in! I announce the winners of the Awards Circuit Community Awards for 1999. Did American Beauty keep its crown or did David Fincher’s Fight Club, the most nominated film, perform a clean sweep? Listen!
Awards Circuit Power Hour is up and alive again this week with a jammed-packed agenda for all of your listening pleasures. A lot of great stuff to talk about from the past week:
Awards Circuit Power Hour is back this week with a great in-depth talk about some of the highlights of the past week.
We kick off the podcast talking about the new trailer for Romeo and Juliet. Is it a story that needs to be told…again? Also, Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfield has a terrific year ahead of her including a role in Tommy Lee Jones’ next directorial effort. Is there wiggle room for her to make a second showing with Oscar so soon?
The Awards Circuit Power Hour team is back this week with a fun-filled agenda. We start the podcast on a somber note and speak about the passing of the film critic, Roger Ebert at the age of 70. What did he mean to the staff? We also look at his number #1 films of the year and what kind of taste the great critic had for films.
The final two of Circuit Madness came and went. Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List faced off against Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. One of them is about to be named the “Best” Best Picture Winner of All-Time! Which one will it be? You have to listen to find out.
Trailer Talk is up next and we speak about the stylistic promises of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives with Ryan Gosling and Kristin Scott Thomas. Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby gets a similar conversation but with less enthusiasm. What are some problems we see for the upcoming adaptation are also discussed. Finally, the less than stellar trailer for the upcoming remake of Carrie with Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore has almost no faith in most of the writing staff.
We play an exciting horror edition of “Do, Dump, or Marry?” – Terence brings up quite a bit from the The Omen to having the staff choose between the scream queens of cinema. What would you do?
The MTV Movie Awards are airing LIVE this Sunday and is being hosted by Rebel Wilson, star and nominee of Pitch Perfect (2012). We go over their “better-than-usual” slate of nominees and try to discuss who and what will win at the ceremony.
It’s not the Awards Circuit Power Hour without Oscar talk. Last week, we spoke about high-profile writers that have something to deliver this year. This time around, the directors are our focus. Going down the line from Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity to Richard Linklater for Before Midnight, even an outside shot for a documentary director like Sarah Polley for Stories We Tell is toyed with.
Terence makes a new plea to Hollywood in this week’s edition of Stop! Making It Happen and it circles around NBC’s newest show “Hannibal.”
It’s a short, sweet podcast today as the Awards Circuit Power Hour reveals the results of our first annual Circuit Madness. We’re down to four films and we may be in store for a surprise or two. Download the latest bracket>>>Oscar_Madness_Full_8
We talk over the news of the past week including the new trailer for Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight, Wes Anderson possibly entering the Oscar race for the second year in a row, and the December releases becoming “thinner” than usual.
Awards Circuit Power Hour is full of speculation this week. We’re talking about dozens of possible Oscar contenders this year and asking that fateful question, will they ever win an Oscar?
The Awards Circuit Power Hour is back this week and we get into an interesting discussion about a few things.
Terence is back from SXSW Festival where he saw a slew of films including At Any Price and Evil Dead, which he goes on a rave about. He also talks about his favorite films seen at the film festival.
The Awards Circuit Power Hour is focusing on the Oscars 2013 Post Mortem. What were our big gripes with the show? How did Seth MacFarlane do as a host? Was it too long?
We also examine Ben Affleck’s Argo (2012) and its three Oscar wins for Picture, Editing, and Adapted Screenplay. How will the film stand the test of time and look next to other Best Picture winners? Was Ang Lee’s Life of Pi #2 in the lineup?
The Pros and Cons with the Oscar ceremony. What did they do right? What did they do wrong?
A look at all the winners: What was the biggest surprise of the night?
Terence has a rant on this week’s edition of “Stop Making It Happen” while Mark gives us some knowledge on this week’s “Did You Know?”
We introduce the new series that will be brought to you during the off-season including Michael Ward’s “Everything Comes Back Around,” Nicole Melkonian’s “Writer’s Block,” and Tiff Chai’s “International Circuit.”
Since the twelfth season of American Idol has kicked off, we begin our Past Idol Series with a short chat with Season 11′s Hallie Day, who made the Top 24. How was her experience on the show and what she has planned next in this past Idol world? Follow Hallie at @HDayAI11
We preview a bit of the Oscars 2014 and prepping you for next week’s preview. What film are we placing at #1 on our predictions? Also, what do you want to see at next year’s Oscar ceremony?
The Awards Circuit Power Hour generates some lively discussions this week among the staff. I’m joined by Terence, Joey, and Mark to dive into the Oscar race as well as other various topics:
We talk about the BAFTA Awards that took place on Sunday where Argo reigned supreme. How many awards will Ben Affleck’s film win? Does the surprise win for Emmanuelle Riva mean anything? (time of recording was Sunday as I was at the time unaware that she didn’t attend the ceremony)
We take a question via one of our readers, Michael Napoli, that generates some discussion about Daniel Day-Lewis winning this third Oscar. Katharine Hepburn won four Oscars over fifty years while Day-Lewis seems to be winning three over thirty, having an average of one nomination every five films. Could there be an upset in his future?
I deliver your Academy Idol Results. The Top 4 competed during “Scores Week.” With no Bottom Two named, which of the films, Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty, would surprise you with an elimination? Listen for the Top 3 announcement.
Argo wins the USC Scripter award over heavy hitters Silver Linings Playbook and Lincoln. Is Chris Terrio lined up for an Adapted Screenplay win?
Final Oscar ballots are out! When is the best time to make your final predictions?
In light of Nicole Melkonian’s newest series, Writer’s Block, we discuss some of favorite screenplays of all-time. I also announce that the staff will be writing up their “10 Greatest Screenplays of All-Time” following the Oscars light last year’s popular, “10 Greatest Films of All-Time.”
We are now officially two weeks away from Oscar Sunday, which only means The Awards Circuit is working double-time to bring you the latest and greatest in awards news. We started off our charitable offerings with some fun yet informative banter on Power Hour, each of us sharing our thoughts on the state of the race (as in: Argo or Lincoln; ignore ALL else). On top of revealing who went home on Academy Idol — the most shocking elimination of the season, by the way — Editor-in-Chief Clayton Davis was proud to announce your 2012 Awards Circuit Community Award nominees! I hope a vast majority of your votes made an impact on this year’s ACCA lineup. Also, don’t forget to keep voting while the polls remain open! Read more on Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 2/10)…
Just when The Awards Circuit thought Argo would put the brakes on its steamrolling of the competition, it shocks us again with key victories at SAG and DGA. It’s now abundantly clear that Ben Affleck’s third directorial outing is the frontrunner heading into the Oscar ceremony. Read more on Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 2/3)…
As the talk of 2012 slowly comes to an end, The Awards Circuit moves forward by embracing the new film year. Joey Magidson and Terence Johnson spent a full nine days in Park City, Utah getting to know the films and filmmakers that could make a huge impact in 2013. Check out their interviews, reviews and daily video blogs for the latest Sundance reports. Be sure to also glance at the Sundance Award Winners, just announced last night. It’s no surprise that the festival’s big awards champion, Fruitvale, is now in the nurturing yet powerful hands of The Weinstein Company. Read more on Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 1/27)…

The staff have come together and put together the first annual Circuit Awards. We announce all the nominees but don’t fray, the Awards Circuit Community Awards (or better known as ACCA) voting period will be opening Monday night. Get your votes ready!
This past week AMPAS presented their nominees for the very best of 2012. We go through a slew of categories to discuss our reactions and who could be winning in six weeks time. With Spielberg’s Lincoln leading with 12 nominations and Lee’s Life of Pi close behind with 11, are we due for an upset or can a film with no directing nomination like Ben Affleck’s Argo pull through at the last minute?
We also talk some of the BFCA winners, the show, and how the first award show of the season can be perceived.
The Golden Globes are tonight and we make our final predictions of who and what can receive a boost from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
It’s our FINAL podcast BEFORE Oscar nominations are announced. I’m sure you all have a lot on your mind. You don’t have to just submit questions this time around, you can give some nice, well-thought out theories on how the race could go as well as general inquiries. We’ll be reading them on the podcast when we record tomorrow evening.

Hello again, fans of The Awards Circuit. We hope you all had an extremely fulfilling (and filling) Thanksgiving Weekend! This week brought us a host of events, perhaps none more involving than the official launch of Academy Idol Season 6. Last Sunday, we asked you to VOTE for your favorite film(s) amongst the competing Original Films fighting for a spot as a Top 13 Finalist. Which five moved on to become the first members of this elite group? Here are your results. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see your favorite movie among the lineup. Chances are that the AC staff will save some fan favorites to fight another day during next week’s Wild Card Show, which will also include two films chosen by Editor-in-Chief Clayton Davis that weren’t in the original Top 26 lineup. We hope you contributed your suggestions on the matter, as they will greatly aid Clayton in the decision-making process. Read more on Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 11/25)…
Hello again, readers of The Awards Circuit! Before I begin the week’s recap, I want to first start off by saying a big “THANK YOU” to Daniel Ashtiany for taking over the reins for me while I was covering the AFI Film Fest. Great job, mate! Speaking of Los Angeles’ second major film festival of the year — which sadly came to an end on Thursday — did you happen to check out the AFI Fest wrap-up article, citing the best of the best in above-the-line categories (Tiff Chai, Nicole Melkonian and I select our individual picks)? At the very least, I hope we helped rev up a bit of excitement for some of the hottest movies coming out this winter! Read more on Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 11/11)…
Never a dull moment at The Awards Circuit, we began with two fantastic articles from our newest contributing writers, Nicole Melkonian and Tiff Chai. Nicole goes with her heart — which we are so thankful of — and lists the 10 Greatest Films by a Female Director. Tiff Chai, who is spearheading the site’s focus on international cinema, profiles one of China’s most talented, innovative and masterful filmmakers: Gordon Chan, who she dubs “The Chinese Scorsese.” Read more on Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 10/28)…
It’s that time of the week again where we are taking your questions for our upcoming episode of The Awards Circuit Power Hour! If the East Coast isn’t washed away this weekend, we’ll be recording our episode on Sunday night and it will be premiering on Monday morning.
The AC Team comes together this week to try and decipher many question marks about the season. We also celebrate our 25th episode. Thanks for listening all these months. Here’s the 25 more! The agenda for today’s episode is listed below:
With the 2012 Presidential Election right around the corner, and Lincolna serious contender for “Best Picture,” this week at The Awards Circuit felt more than ever like an arduous yet exciting journey on the campaign trail. Starting us off with this political theme was Joey Magidson, who released his 10 Best Movie Presidents article for your viewing pleasure. Even our Awards Circuit Power Hour episode was heavy on the politics — Oscar politics, that is, centered on politically heavy dramas, Lincoln and Argo, and more “current state of the race” talk. I also pitch a theory to my colleagues about the possibility/likelihood of John Hawkes missing out on a “Best Actor” nod due to the “Hitchcock” factor and the bigger studios having more control over the awards season this year.
