This week’s #9 is ‘The Place Beyond The Pines‘ (Focus) and #10 goes to ‘Scary Movie 5‘ (W/Dim.).

On the international charts this week, ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘ (Par.) and ‘The Croods‘ (Fox) topped the charts, opening strong and picking up momentum as they travel the world. On the domestic charts this week, the Joes take #1, leading strongly ahead of the rest, but followed by the caveman family of funnies, ‘Tyler Perry’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor‘ (LGF) slipping into the comfortable #3 position, ‘Olympus Has Fallen‘ (FD) blowing into #4, and ‘Oz The Great and Powerful‘ (BV) blows into #5. New to the week, ‘The Host (2013)‘ (ORF) slithers into #6, Halle Berry’s thriller calls into #7, followed by the romantic comedy featuring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd admitted to #8, ‘Spring Breakers‘ (A24) shooting into #9, with the incredible comedy of magicians appearing in at #10. Trailing the top 10, ‘The Place Beyond the Pines‘ (Focus) confuses its way into #20, throwing many people off with the complicated 3 movies in 1 feel, a bit like ‘Australia‘ (2008) that ended three times.

Further down the charts, ‘Ginger & Rosa‘ (A24) takes #61, ‘Reality (2013)‘ (Osci.) at #69, and ‘Leonie‘ (Mont.) at #85. After being left on the Lionsgate shelves for a fair amount of time, The Possession finally got its opportunity to play at the multiplex and won the final weekend at the box office, earning an estimated $17.2 million, wrapping up an interesting 2012 summer box office season. Outpacing the Prohibition-era crime drama Lawless, The Possession was the second consecutive teen-oriented horror film to not screen for critics, following last week’s virtually ignored The Apparition. However, unlike The Apparition, audiences were much interested in being possessed it seems. 2016: Obama’s America attempted to build on its big numbers last weekend on the back of the Republican National Convention, and this week also witnessed an opening of historic proportions. Believe me when I say, it is historic for all the wrong reasons.

A lot of hyperbole has been tossed around with this weekend’s box office figures, since a documentary, 2016: Obama’s America has shocked the movie industry with its success. On Friday, it was erroneously reported that the film would be the #1 film of the weekend; a report later revised to indicate the Rocky Mountain Pictures release would be the #1 new release movie from the weekend. In this week’s Box Office Report we will break down the facts and myths surrounding the anti-Obama documentary’s theatrical success. Elsewhere, the story really is more about the fact that this past weekend represents the lowest attended weekend at the movies all year. The overall gross stands to be the worst since the April 27-29, 2012 weekend, which saw Think Like A Man hold off four new releases (The Pirates! Band Of Misfits, The Five-Year Engagement, Safe, and The Raven) to win the weekend. So, what did people see? How bad was it?
Check out the breakdown after the cut!

Falling short of its precursor, but still strong enough to win a very competitive box office weekend, The Expendables 2 outshot the competition, scoring $28.6 million in its opening weekend. Although again a co-author on the screenplay, Expendables mastermind Sylvester Stallone gave the director’s chair over to Simon West and critics, including our own Joey Magidson, surprisingly embraced the film, which was only screened to critics overseas, in New York, and Los Angeles prior to its release. Coming as no surprise, Expendables 2 drew a sizable Male-25+ contingent of viewers and opening night CinemaScore ratings saw the film come in with a healthy A-. In 2010, the first Expendables blew away the mockery and condescending expectations which preceded that film’s release and grossed $274.4 million worldwide.

That’s right folks, The Avengers is out of the top spot this weekend after Men in Black 3 raked in over $55 million (domestically) to dethrone the former champ. MiB3 took in an additional $132 million overseas, and is well towards earning back its massive $230 million budget (read Michael’s 2-star review of the film here). But fans of The Avengers need not worry, as their film still brought in another $37 million, passing the ridiculous $500 million mark in 23 days, breaking yet another record (it took Avatar 32 days to get to $500 mil). Battleship (10.8 mil), The Dictator (9.6 mil), and Chernobyl Diaries (8.0 mil) took what scraps were left by these two juggernauts to finish 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively this Memorial Day weekend.

For the third week in a row, Marvel’s The Avengers will claim the title of Box Office champion, as the film brought in another $55 million or so. This weekend brought the domestic total for the film to over $457 million, making it the fastest movie ever to reach the $450 million mark (in just 17 days!!). The previous record was held by The Dark Knight, which took a full ten days longer to reach such an astronomic tally. Not only is it on pace to be the highest grossing film of all time, but The Avengers is now Disney’s highest grossing film ever, both domestically and worldwide. It has settled into fourth place all-time, behind Avatar, Titanic, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Marvel/Disney's "Avengers" charters new waters…
There are simply no words that can describe the performance of Marvel/Disney’s The Avengers. For a studio long suffering for any kind of success, Disney/Buena Vista have delivered the greatest opening weekend of all time domestically, eclipsing an unthinkable $207.4 million in three scant days. The Avengers has already outgrossed Thor, Captain America:The First Avenger, and both Hulk films in domestic gross and could catch and surpass both Iron Man films by the end of next weekend. Our own Joey Magidson broke the story yesterday, but we are well on our way to seeing this film become one of the Top 5 biggest grossing films of all time, both domestic and internationally.
Whether this incredible pace holds up or not is obviously something that waits to be seen, but if you burn off 50% of the opening weekend audience, The Avengers still earns approximately $100-$105 million. When considering a very conservative $70-80 million week (Monday-Thursday), we may be looking at a film with a domestic 10-day box office gross up near $400 million. The current 10-day record belongs to The Dark Knight which amassed $313.8 million in its first 10 days. Lastly, The Avengers would have to lose more than 65% of its opening weekend audience to fall short of Avatar‘s record second weekend gross. James Cameron’s box office king banked $75.6 million in its second weekend. For curiosity sake, Avatar‘s 10-day total? $212.7 million.

Sony’s Think Like a Man remains at the top of the box office report after its second week in theatres, though the film dropped its total by 46% down to $18 million. Sony also managed to take the runner-up spot this week with The Pirates! Band of Misfits.
And while The Hunger Games slid to fourth this week, the film has now gone over the $600 million mark worldwide. Read more on Box Office Report: ‘Think Like a Man’ Repeats…
Elizabeth Banks and Jennifer Lawrence in Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games"
Banking on broader appeal than the Twilight franchise and delivering the third-largest opening weekend of all time, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games surpassed even the most optimistic of expectations, with a $152.5 million opening weekend. In a snap of one’s fingers, Jennifer Lawrence will forever be associated with Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson will likewise forever be linked to Peeta Mellark. Their anonymity is gone. Next November 2013, Liam Hemsworth will likely join them in being branded as Gale, with his role exponentially increased in the sequel Catching Fire, and the lives of these three young actors have been irrevocably changed forever. Most who saw the film were in favor of Gary Ross’ adaptation, with yours truly giving it, admittedly, one of the strongest reviews of the lot. Audiences were thrilled, the record books rewritten and Lionsgate’s all in gamble on the franchise rivals that of New Line’s investment in “Lord of the Rings” and Summit’s daring risk on “Twilight”. Everyone knew this franchise would be a success, but third-biggest-opening-of-all-time success? Lots of jaws are still falling open as numbers are continually crunched.

Releasing on 11-11-11, "Immortals" is #1
While the cat could not make it a trifecta, “Puss In Boots” nearly upended Adam Sandler’s “Jack And Jill” for second place, missing the runner-up position by a scant $275k and rolling past $108 million in domestic box office receipts. Soaring above all of the competition was innovative director Tarsem Singh’s third film, “Immortals”, which served as his widest opening film to date and banked $32.2 million in its opening weekend. While some have reported this as a mediocre or even disappointing opening, some people were projecting “Immortals” to finish second or third with a mid-$20 million gross. Relativity Media are ecstatic at how the film was received and their implementation of having a market-by-market determination on critical screenings seemed risky, but ultimately did not hurt the film’s opening numbers.

There is no resisting…
In box office prognostication, sometimes the only thing ever for sure…is that nothing is ever for sure. No one anticipated that DreamWorks’ “Puss In Boots” would not only win the weekend over the much hyped action comedy “Tower Heist”, but would also set a record for the smallest drop ever for a fall movie release (non-holiday). The precocious little swashbuckling cat banked another $33.1 million, raising its 10-day totals to $75.5 million domestic/$114.5 million worldwide and finishing a substantial distance in front of the #2 movie of the weekend. Well on its way to making back its $130 million budget, “Puss In Boots” looks to rule the family movie roost for one more weekend until a suffocating avalanche of family films arrive with “Happy Feet Two” releasing on November 18 and “Arthur Christmas”, “Hugo”, and “The Muppets” all opening on November 23 in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. For those bemoaning a lack of family friendly titles at the box office, your cup is about to runneth over for certain.
So what led to the disappointing start for “Tower Heist” and did audiences warmly receive a third “Harold and Kumar” film? Did any Oscar hopefuls and independent titles make any news? Details and more after the cut!

"Paranormal Activity 3" scored the biggest horror movie opening of all time.
“Paranormal Activity 3″‘s victory at the weekend’s box office was about as easy and obvious a prediction as anyone could make. The horror movie trilogy, which effectively silenced the “Saw” franchise and rekindled a “found-footage” horror film phenomenon in the last few years, not only opened at #1 this past weekend, but decidedly re-wrote the record books at the same time. With a total opening weekend of $52.6 million, “Paranormal Activity 3″ saw an opening of historic proportions.
How many records did “PA3″ actually break? Does this have the legs to be a massive success? How profitable is it already? Did anyone care about some Mighty Macs, Musketeers, or buffoonery from an English spy? Found out the answers to all of these questions and a ton more from the weekend that was…after the cut!

And in this corner…your defending champion…
Delivering a Sunday night knockout punch to the spirited dancing of its competition, “Real Steel” held off the vibrant remake “Footloose” to retain its Box Office Championship for a second consecutive weekend, grossing $16.3 million over the October 14-16 weekend. Reports initially indicated that “Footloose” was hot on the heels of “Real Steel” and would possibly win the weekend. However, once all the ticket sales were tallied, “Footloose”‘s attendance was significantly overestimated and “Real Steel” had a comfortable victory in hand.

Hugh Jackman stars in "Real Steel" (Buena Vista)
As anticipated, the long-awaited science-fiction/action/family/drama “Real Steel” took the championship in the weekend box office tournament, easily outpacing the star-studded “The Ides Of March” in claiming the top spot. A slew of other smaller releases flooded the arthouses and a couple of high profile independent films, a milestone 100th movie for Jackie Chan and the car crash of a horror film, “The Human Centipede II: Full Sequence”, were met with tepid to mediocre attendance.
Budgeted for $110 million (though many feel that number is vastly underreported), “Real Steel” shocked no one by running away with the domestic crown, with $27.3 million banked for its opening weekend. Starring Hugh Jackman, in a film executive produced by Steven Spielberg amongst others, “Real Steel” was mocked as the Rock’Em Sock’Em Robots Movie, a fair depiction for a film set in a world in the not-to-distant future where boxing, MMA, and professional wrestling has given way to remote-controlled robots waging battle in the esteemed WRB – The World Boxing League. Critics were muted and middle-of-the-road on the film, some championed the family dynamic of a father/son story which lies at the heart of the film. Others made comparable comparisons to “Real Steel” as a “Science-Fiction Rocky”, citing its underdog trying to overcome the odds fighting story. Others, including yours truly, found it incomprehensible and an outright mess. Either way, tracking indicated that opening night audiences were on board, CinemaScore reported an “A” grade, and word-of-mouth was strong leading into Saturday.

"Dolphin Tale" (Warner Bros.)
A spunky romantic comedy, a mindbending suspense/thriller featuring Oscar winning talent, and one of the best received films of the year about a young cancer patient struggling with a life-altering diagnosis all could not match the interest and appeal of dolphins, baseball, animated lions, and Christian firefighters this weekend. As box office receipts were tallied, Warner Bros. “Dolphin Tale” swam past “The Lion King 3D” and “Moneyball” and took the top spot at the box office this weekend, tallying $13.9 million in its second weekend of release.
For Warner Bros., “Dolphin Tale””s victory over the weekend was sweet vindication for a film and a project that seemed to be frozen out of its potential box office success by Disney’s surprising reception for their “Lion King 3D” re-release, which I reported on last week. After initially claiming they would not hold “The Lion King 3D” in theaters for a third weekend, after winning the previous two weekend box office crowns, Disney went for the trifecta and but became victims of attrition and perhaps, ironically, their own marketing. With “The Lion King 3D” arriving on home video today, October 4, 2011, the inevitable television campaign certainly stunted attendance. While “Dolphin Tale” did not deliver a strong per screen average, the inspirational family drama did hold off “Moneyball” and four new contending films. One of which, quickly and against expectations, became the talk of the weekend. Read more on Box Office Final: Resilient “Dolphin” Swims Past The Pack……

Hakuna Matata indeed…"The Lion King" is #1 (Disney/Buena Vista)
After actual counts were reported, “The Lion King 3D”outperformed estimates and eclipsed $30.2 million over the weekend, besting even the most ambitious of predictions and delivering the 4th largest September opening of all time. With 4 wide-scale releases opening this past weekend, “The Lion King 3D” achieved its feat despite being booked at the fewest number of locations of those four films. Overall, box office ticket sales ramped up 32.9% amongst the Top 12 films, while only one film within the 40 Most Attended movies of the weekend, not counting those films moved to the second-run discount houses, saw an increase in ticket sales from the previous week.

Disney's "The Lion King" is new again to a new generation of moviegoers…
Part of the excitement I have, as someone who analyzes box office returns and results, is never really knowing what is going to happen. The unpredictability is contagious and this weekend proves that often times, the only thing for sure about prognosticating how films will perform is that nothing is for sure.
This weekend’s example, “The Lion King 3D”, a 1994 Disney classic which was re-released in the much maligned 3D format, and grossed more than the three other major new releases combined. With an estimated $29.3 million taken in, “The Lion King 3D” was apparently the film families were waiting for to return en masse to the multiplex.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Contagion (Warner Bros.)
After actual counts were reported, “Contagion” ruled the box office rankings in a poorly attended weekend, the lowest grossing weekend for the Top 12 films since, interestingly, the same comparable weekend in 2010. Outside of the Top 12 however, two films achieved levels of infamy not seen in years.
CONTAGION
As indicated yesterday, the star-studded viral disaster epic “Contagion” ended the impressive run at the top for “The Help” grossing $22.4 million. With a production budget of $60 million, the Steven Soderbergh directed thriller looks to finish somewhere in the mid-$60 million range with this tracking. Warner Bros. are reportedly accepting of the start, hoping for bigger, but will likely take the success on such a sparsely attended weekend.
