Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 8.03.44 PMIf luck is a lady, we might be seeing two of the rising stars of the silver screen in a movie musical. Earlier today, reports came out that Fox was planning to remake Guys and Dolls. Not surprising given the rampant remake culture in Hollywood and the enduring popularity of the musical, but was surprising was the rumors that Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon Levitt are being courted to star in the picture, playing the roles Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando played in the 1955 film. Producers no doubt are trying to capture some of the charisma both men showed in their brief moments during the past Academy Award ceremony.

The Oscar Tracker gets its first update...

    April 2, 2013

BeforeMidnight_ImageAs April has completely come out of nowhere and become fully present, I’ve updated the new Oscar Tracker to keep in mind everything that has already been released this year so far or have screened at major festivals like Sundance, SXSW, and Tribeca.

There’s no super-duper “out there” contender that looks like it can go all the way as of today with the exception of Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight.  While the film is an absolute marvel, it won’t be determined until the autumn if it can sustain throughout the summer and become a leading contender like last year with Moonrise Kingdom and Beasts of the Southern Wild.  Obviously, the latter was the only film to crack the Best Picture lineup but if we’re in store for a change like AMPAS going back to five Best Picture nominees, as some have speculated, a small indie film like Linklater’s could get lost throughout the summer and fall months.  As of now, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy could show up with Linklater in Adapted Screenplay but on their performances alone, they will warrant some consideration. Both are superb in their roles and will have their champions throughout the year. Read more on First Quarter Round-Up – Are There Any Oscar Contenders?…

    In Defense: Channing Tatum

Sticking up for an actor with an impressive range and resume...future Oscar winner?

    March 6, 2013

Channing-Tatum-channing-tatum-20369900-1000-1483The alternate title for this post was going to be ‘Why Channing Tatum is our Next Great Movie Star (and could win an Oscar soon)’ but I decided to spare you all the righteous indignation of it all. I decided to publish this after a lengthy Twitter discussion with Joseph, Joey, Robert, Mark and reader extraordinaire John Rivera regarding Channing Tatum. It started with me asking Joey if C-Tates, who is going to be in the presumed Oscar contender Foxcatcher, would be in a position to be nominated for an Oscar given that most people seem to be predicting big things from the film. It unraveled from there all in 140 characters (you can view the convo here and here) and I thought it might be fun to offer up a defense of the actor and really dig into his awards potential.

    Side Effects (***)

Steven Soderbergh's theatrical swan song is a nifty flick that owes a great deal to Hitchcock...

    February 9, 2013

side_effectsIf Side Effects represents the final time that a new Steven Soderbergh film will debut in theaters, then the filmmaker has gone out with an effective thriller that certainly doesn’t rank among his top tier works, but is easily one of his most digestible. Teaming up once again with scribe Scott Z. Burns, Soderbergh has made an impeccably crafted genre entry that reminded me a lot of Alfred Hitchcock’s work. While the material isn’t as unique as I would have preferred for this farewell for the man sometimes known as Peter Andrews (at least when he does his own cinematography), there are some very nice performances to take note of. To be fair, the screenplay is more than smart and twisty enough than you’d expect for a February release, but the acting of Jude Law and Rooney Mara are really what I found most engaging. I honestly don’t have a lot of complaints about this movie, unless you count hoping that Soderbergh wasn’t wrapping up with this one (not counting his HBO movie about Liberace). It’s somewhat workmanlike, but the workman is so good you quickly get wrapped up in this story of prescription pills, therapy, and anxiety.

The winter movie drought continues this week with a meager sprinkling of notable new releases.  The new Steven Soderbergh thriller, Side Effects,  joins the dwindling fray, as does the crime comedy, Identity Thief, and Australian foreign film, Lore.

I’m not exactly sure what this means. Unlike every other announcement so far, AMPAS has unveiled today that Charlize Theron, Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Daniel Radcliffe will make “special appearances” at the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony. Not presenters. Not performers. Just… appearances. Anyone else care to take a gander at what they could be involved in? Maybe something to do with the introduction? Sometimes the host likes to go into the crowd and embarrass a few stars, though normally it involves the nominees. Perhaps they are doing a musical number together (since that is their theme this year)? I really don’t know. Have a look at the press release after the jump, then leave your best guess at what they might be involved with at the ceremony in the comments.

For someone who has a tremendous fear of flying, I can say that the opening act of Robert Zemeckis’ Flight is one of the most terrifying film experiences I’ve had in years, as Denzel Washington flies a malfunctioning plane completely inverted in an attempt to save the lives on board his craft. From here, the film becomes less of a story about the survival of a plane crash and the legal proceedings that follow, and more of a story about a man trying to survive his own personal crash landing as he deals with inner demons in the same vein as Leaving Las Vegas or Days of Wine and Roses before it. Denzel plays Whip Whitaker, a charming and brilliant pilot afflicted by alcoholism, and does so with the usual casual grace and tender ease we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from the two-time Oscar winner. Flight is a capable film about hitting rock bottom, coming to terms with that bottom, and finding a way towards recovery and salvation. Sure, this is something we have seen before, but few times have we seen it carried by such a strong and magnetic performance as we do this time around from one of this generation’s finest actors. New Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Side Effects’

Get a glimpse at the new psychological thriller starring Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law...

    November 2, 2012

Steven Soderbergh’s next film, Side Effects, debuted a brand new trailer today.  Somewhat similarly themed to last year’s medical drama, Contagion, this psychological thriller deals with the unexpected side effects caused by an anxiety pill.  See the official trailer after the jump.

    10 Years (***)

This ensemble reunion flick manages to get by on its friendly vibes...

    September 15, 2012

Seeking a home somewhere between ‘The Big Chill’ and ‘American Reunion’ (though far superior to its most structurally similar film ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’) in terms of high school reunion flicks, ’10 Years’ manages to be a charmer that succeeds because of the chemistry of its cast. The film is sometimes a bit of a mess, but it’s an enjoyable mess that deftly keeps things from ever getting too heavy or too silly. It’s truly an ensemble piece, though we begin by focusing in on Channing Tatum, who continues his surprisingly good 2012 (‘The Vow’ excluded, of course) with another solid piece of acting. Even though I liked the latest sequel in the ‘American Pie’ franchise, this movie captures the reunion spirit in a more authentic way and doesn’t feel the need to shortchange that aspect of the story. Channing Tatum is getting nostalgic in the Trailer for ‘Ten Years’

The ensemble comedy looks to win you over this September...

    August 22, 2012

Ever since enraging me earlier this year in ‘The Vow’, Channing Tatum has been slowly softening my stance on him by impressing me in both ’21 Jump Street’ and ‘Magic Mike’. Now, he’s going the indie route again by starring in and producing the reunion comedy ‘Ten Years’, and we have a Trailer that you can see after the jump. I’m actually seeing the film today, but can’t talk about it until next month, so take a gander and try and guess what my take on the flick will be. I will say this…the cast (which includes Rosario Dawson, Justin Long, Anthony Mackie, Kate Mara, Oscar Isaac, and Chris Pratt) is pretty good as a starting point. Time will tell though. Give it a look below…

Sequel to ‘Magic Mike’ in the works

He's also looking to star in an Evel Knievel biopic...

    July 15, 2012

Channing Tatum has done his part to change my opinion of him this year. He hit a new low for me with ‘The Vow’ back in February, but a month later he surprised me with his comic aptitude in ’21 Jump Street’. Finally, last month Tatum had what I might call his career high point with ‘Magic Mike’. Of course, he now has even more options in terms of the next step in his acting, and according to The Hollywood Reporter here, 2 of the projects are going to be a sequel to ‘Magic Mike’ and also a biopic of the stunt man Evel Knievel. After the jump you can see the details of these ventures, but I certainly think both (especially if the sequel isn’t just a quick cash grab, which Tatum’s involvement suggests it won’t be) have potential…

    Weekend Openings (June 29-July 1)

Male strippers and a foul-mouthed teddy bear challenge Pixar at the box office this weekend. Will they prevail?

    Author: Robert Hamer
    June 30, 2012

Looks like this weekend will go down in the books as one of pleasant surprises, both financially and quality-wise.  Whether that will translate into Oscar nominations may happen for at least one of them…

Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum take us into the world of male strippers in Magic Mike, about a seasoned dancer who takes a rookie under his wing and shows him the ropes.  Based on the star’s own beginnings as a club dancer, critics have been very positive on the film, including our own Joey Magidson, who praised its writing, performances and direction from Soderbergh.  Rather than being a bubbly dance flick aimed squarely at female audiences, Joey instead relayed back an offbeat and surprisingly in-depth character study of men in an odd profession.  Nevertheless, the presence of handsome men taking their clothes off will certainly draw in one kind of audience and turn off another, no matter how different the actual film is.  Online and Friday ticket sales were strong and should give the film a good $30-35 million haul.  The critical acclaim, however, raises even more intriguing possibilities for its awards prospects.  Too racy for the Academy, you say?  Tell that to The Full Monty.  I would not be surprised to see this among the Best Original Screenplay nominees next January.  The performances are less of a certainty, and will probably require a focused campaign to give the well-received work of Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum or Alex Pettyfer a shot at an Academy Award nomination.  My opinion is that good-looking men already have a hell of a time getting noticed by the Academy when they don’t draw attention to how attractive they are, so I am not betting on any of them any time soon, but that could change… Read more on Weekend Openings (June 29-July 1)…

    Magic Mike (***½)

Steven Soderbergh works his magic with an unlikely winner of a film...

    June 27, 2012

If Robert Altman had chosen to make a film about the lives of male strippers, the end result might have resembled ‘Magic Mike’, a shockingly great flick that’s far better than it probably has any right to be (I’ll talk more about the Altman connection in a bit). A ton of credit goes to filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, who turns in his best film in quite some time. The movie is funny and full of life, but also knows when to get dark, resulting in a rather complete cinematic experience. I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to like this film, considering my issues with Channing Tatum and the distinct feeling that the thing just wasn’t aimed at me whatsoever, but boy was I wrong. Tatum gives one of his best performances (though I won’t say that’s amazing praise…but he’s very good here, I swear) as part of this ensemble cast, and the script that he was the inspiration for and that Reid Carolin penned is surprisingly insightful. I won’t call this an Oscar player right now, but it’s likely going to do fantastic business when it opens on Friday, and I wouldn’t be shocked if the screenplay manages to sneak into a few precursors here and there. This is one of the biggest surprises of the year for me.

In a choice that’s sure to make Clayton very annoyed and irritated happy, Django Unchained himself, Jaime Foxx, has been cast as the President in actioner White House Down. He’ll join actors Channing Tatum and Maggie Gyllenhaal in the Robert Zemeckis directed flick. - Indiewire

Edgar Ramirez (Carlos) is gearing up to star in another biopic. This time, he’ll be playing Simon Bolivar, the legendary Venezuelan military and political leader who helped secure independence from the Spanish empire. – Variety

Wolf of Wall Street casting is in full effect. Jon Bernthal, no longer a member of the undead, is joining the film as well as Rob Reiner, who will play Leo’s father.

There’ll be no needles or double sided dildos around Jennifer Connelly’s next pairing with Darren Aronofsky. Connelly is set to star alongside Russell Crowe as Noah’s wife in Aronofsky’s retelling of the biblical story. – Variety

The Wachowski siblings’ projects have been very successful at not only redefining science fiction narratives, but in the secrecy their films maintain up until opening. It was only a matter of time before the success of The Avengers and The Hunger Games had an affect on the industry. In a relatively last minute move, Variety is reporting Paramount is pulling G.I. Joe Retaliation from this summer’s movie line up to convert the film into 3D. The movie will now be released on Mar 29, 2013. Paramount was apparently motivated to make the move because focus groups questioned why the film wasn’t in stereo and that the movie would make even more money oversees.

The Magic Mike promo swing is in full effect. Not only have the stars done a full article and photo shoot in Entertainment Weekly, but a new trailer from the film has been released. The trailer after the jump is much better than the first at giving away bits of the plot but really focusing on what people are actually going to see this movie for, the male strippers. We get glimpses of all the main cast and their routines (Matt Bomer as Ken doll, hilarious) as well as the relationship between Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike and Alex Pettyfer’s character.

What a difference having a couple of $100 million hits in your back pocket can make. With two more films due out this year and three films either filming or in pre-production, Channing Tatum is well on his way to becoming the male Jessica Chastain. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Tatum is in final negotiations to star in the action thriller White House Down. The script, which was bought by Columbia for $3 million, is set to be directed by Roland Emmerich and would see Tatum play a Secret Service agent who happens to be a single dad and must save the president when 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is take over by a paramilitary group.

He has two major films coming in June with G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Magic Mike, the trailer for which just arrived today. 21 Jump Street (***)

"21 Jump Street" is one of the year's first surprises...

    Author: Anna Young
    March 17, 2012

21 Jump Street, based on the hit 80s series, is the latest spinoff to make it on the big screen, and boy is it fantastic.

Being a huge fan of the 80s sitcom that made Johnny Depp a star, I had many worries when I first heard that Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum would be in the new updated version. My first concern was the casting of Channing Tatum; he isn’t known as the most talented actor but this is by far the best decision he’s ever made. I always said this guy was good at comedy, mainly because he’s great at playing dumb. Let’s be honest, it’s true. My second concern was Jonah Hill going over the top and taking the original series and turning it into a raunchy movie that had nothing to do with the show, but he proved me wrong as well.
