Tis the season for critics groups to begin announcing their “Best of 2012″ lists and one of the earliest announcements come from the Sight and Sound critics. Comprised of about 100 international critics, it’s one of the more influential voting bodies, and this year their top spot went to Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. Other Oscar contenders such as Amour (#3), Beasts of the Southern Wild (#5, tie) and Moonrise Kingdom (#7) made the list as well. Check out the full list after the jump!

I’m just about ready to declare filmmaker David Cronenberg in an official slump, at least in my eyes. After the underwhelming ‘A Dangerous Method’ last year, Cronenberg is back with an even bigger letdown with his adaptation of the novel ‘Cosmopolis’. Almost none of this film worked from me, and it was a total chore to sit through. Badly paced and written in such a way (and so unevenly acted, to boot…especially Robert Pattinson’s performance, but more on that later) that the characters are just expounding monologues at each other instead of talking, pretty much the only thing I didn’t dislike here are the visuals from Cronenberg. The film looks great, it just didn’t do a thing for me. It’s likely to split viewers right down the middle when it opens on Friday, and so far it’s managed to split my fellow critics as well. I was expecting to like it, but as this Early Review will show, it just fell short on almost every level possible for me. Somewhere along the line Don DeLillo’s novel was transformed from Oscar bait to an instantly forgettable and massively disappointing exercise in pointless oddity. The flick is weird enough to feel like a David Cronenberg work, but the normal quality is severely lacking. Those who like it will probably LOVE it, but those like me will just shake our heads and sigh.

A few new stills have arrived from David Cronenberg’s (Eastern Promises) upcoming film, Cosmopolis. Cosmopolis is a a contemporary thriller that stars Robert Pattinson (as a 28-year old financial whiz kid and billionaire having a really bad day), Paul Giamatti, Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon, Samantha Morton, Kevin Durand and Mathieu Amalric, and hits theatres August 17th.

One of the more interesting films that played at Cannes this year had to have been David Cronenberg’s ‘Cosmopolis’. Now, it didn’t quite get Oscar caliber reviews, but it was certainly well enough received overall to keep my interest in this project rather high. Well, the wait for this one isn’t as long as I originally thought, as Variety has pegged it here for a U.S. release on August 17th. It doesn’t seem like the spot to start an awards campaign from, but you never know. After the jump I’ll speculate on what it might be gunning for, but mark this one down for release in 2 months…

And so the most prestigious film festival in the world comes to an end, with the “awards season” taking a vague shape right behind it. Cannes, usually to its credit, has almost always been far outside of Oscar’s wheelhouse, opting for indie and world cinema superstars over Hollywood royalty that make the cinema snobs raise their pinkies in solidarity. However, recently the spotlight has increased on the festival in recent years as more and more of their darlings have been getting some love from the Academy as well. Earlier this year we saw no less than five films from Cannes receive Oscar nominations, including opener Midnight in Paris, Palme d’Or champ The Tree of Life and eventual Best Picture winner The Artist. Going back further sees Oscar nominees from the likes of Biutiful, Inglourious Basterds, The White Ribbon and Waltz with Bashir. Read more on Predicting the 2012 Cannes Film Festival Winners…

Over at Cannes both David Cronenberg and his son Brandon have debuted new film, and apparently the son is following in his father’s footsteps. Brandon Cronenberg has a body horror film called ‘Antiviral’ that’s gotten some nice, if reserved, word so far. As for the elder Cronenberg, his highly anticipated flick ‘Cosmopolis’ has been seen, and the early reviews are incredibly mixed. Some thing it’s a return to form of sorts for the director, while others were rather disappointed. After the jump you can see what some of the reactions have been, but I don’t think this is surprising at all (Cronenberg is always divisive). What’s somewhat surprising is that Brandon’s film has been slightly better received overall than David’s. Anyway, check out the festival buzz on ‘Cosmopolis’ below…

With the final Twilight film being released in November, Robert Pattinson is looking to branch out from the YA saga that propelled him to stardom. He is the star of Cannes entry Cosmopolis and The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Pattinson has joined military thriller Mission: Blacklist as the man who spearheaded the capture of Saddam Hussein. The movie is based on the book Mission: Black List #1: The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein — As Told by the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture.

‘Cosmopolis’ is not a film that’s especially high on my list of anticipated releases for 2012, and I honestly don’t know why that is. I like David Cronenberg and it sounds like a flick I’d want to see. Go figure, maybe it’s the Robert Pattinson factor keeping me at arm’s length? Who knows, but anyway…the trailer has made its way onto the internet, so you can see it after the jump, complete with an announcement that this will be one of the films playing at the Cannes Film Festival (this actually came a few hours ahead of the official announcement of the festival lineup). Give it a look below and let me know if I’m nuts for not being more excited about this particular movie…I have a feeling that I could very well be, but I’ll leave that up to you all.
