The Producers Guild of America announced their nominations today for TV and Digital Series and as one might expect, many of the nominees were also Emmy nominated. In the Drama category, every Emmy nominated show except for Boardwalk Empire, made it while Louie is the lone Comedy choice that wasn’t up for its respective award at the Emmys. All other nominations for the 2013 Producers Guild Award categories will be announced January 3, 2013, along with the individual producers. The awards themselves will  be held Jan. 26, 2013, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, with special honors going to Bob and Harvey Weinstein, J.J. Abrams, and Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. TV Review: Downton Abbey (***)

More of the same as Downton bustles into the not-so-roaring twenties

    September 29, 2012

Downton Abbey series 3 castDespite a mild backlash from a minority of rather high-profile critics, hit period drama Downton Abbey returned to UK television earlier this month for a much anticipated third run. Since its September 2010 debut, the record-breaking show has captivated viewers with its lavish production and soap opera storylines that juxtapose the upstairs-downstairs relationships between a noble family and their myriad servants in early 20th century England.

Oscar-winning writer and series creator Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) has crafted a believable and historically reverent world for a twenty-strong ensemble cast who have faced the likes of the First World War, Spanish influenza, the sinking of the Titanic, and the Dowager Countess’ forked tongue with unrelenting English resistance and a rather twisted magnetism for scandal. It all adds up to a dangerously addictive concoction that has already earned the show 9 Emmys, 2 BAFTAs, a Golden Globe, and legions of fans across the globe. After just two episodes, this latest series has already become the most watched television drama in the UK this year.

This is Part 2 of the Drama Series chat. You can check out Part 1 where Joseph and I discussed the supporting actors here.

Terence: Well since you mention sign sealed and delivered awards last time, do we see Jon Hamm finding some way to rig ballots so Bryan Cranston won’t win again?

    OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
    Hugh Bonneville, Downton Abbey
    Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
    Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
    Michael C. Hall, Dexter
    Jon Hamm, Mad Men
    Damian Lewis, Homeland

Jon Hamm realizing Cranston will win again

Joseph: No, no, and no. And I hate that. Jon Hamm has deserved his Emmy win for so long. Every time people think it’s his year, it suddenly isn’t and some other person gets the win, mostly Cranston. But Cranston’s new found Hollywood upsurge really makes him an even stronger contender than before, Hamm’s acting hasn’t been praised outside of Mad Men, whereas Cranston’s has been.

The nominations for the Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today by Kerry Washington and Jimmy Kimmel. Mad Men and American Horror Story lead the pack with 17 nominations each. Modern Family leads the comedy sector with 14 nominations. There were some changes to the acting categories, most notably Downton Abbey gaining 6 acting nods, matching Modern Family for the most among a single cast. Check out the list of nominees and stay tuned for some analysis later today !

The Emmys, even more so than the Oscars, are strangely predictable; once the TV Academy likes a show or actor they continue to nominate them over and over. It’s the reason Mad Men, Modern Family and 30 Rock will be in contention again, and why Mariska Hargitay will never be far from the Emmy spotlight. What then to make of upstarts like HomelandDownton Abbey, Girls, Revenge, and New Girl? Or overlooked shows like Community? The acting races seem even tighter than usual, especially in the comedy categories with shows like Happy Endings and Parks and Recreation trying to break through in the crowded supporting categories.  It’ll be interesting to see what shows and which actors land nominations tomorrow, so without further ado here are my predictions!

NBC has been much maligned for its programming choices and ratings woes, but the recently announced Critics Choice Television Awards sure make it seem as if they were firing on all cylinders. The network racked up 14 nominations, including six nominations for fan favorite Community, on their way to being the most nominated network. NBC is followed closely by ABC with 13 nominations, FOX and HBO with 12, AMC and FX with 11. The Critics Choice Television Awards are voted on by the Broadcast Television Journalist Association and will be presented on June 18th at a gala in Beverly Hills. The full list of nominees is available after the jump.

The TV mini-series/movie has given us but the respect for this form has dwindled, even in the minds of the TV Academy. Deadline is reporting that the TV Academy is planning combine the supporting actor/actress prizes with that of their lead counterparts. The new categories, to be presented in 2013, will be called Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Movie and Outstanding Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, and feature 6 nominees.

BAFTA Awards Statues 2012Essentially the British version of the Emmys, the 58th annual BAFTA Television Awards took place tonight at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with the big winners including Dominic West, Emily Watson, and Rolf Harris, who was inducted into the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship.

Presented by Irish comedian Dara O’Briain, the show takes a more fun and mischievous tone than its film-based sibling, which fell uncharacteristically flat this year. The nominees here are somewhat less A-list, but an eclectic bunch nonetheless, with the best of comedy, soaps, reality TV and serious drama all crammed under one roof.
